Unless Portage Place aged about 120 years in the last 6 hours,
I don't think that particular sign belongs there!!!!!!!!

The office building/podium portion of this project will be built with a large crawler crane. The hotel tower will use a tower crane.

There were a couple of smaller cranes on site today that appeared to be setting up to do some lifting so it looks like the assmebly is underway.

I think that is a great development for that area. It's basically a waste land, dead end now that Springfield is closed at CPT. Add some density to the area. I'm assuming most of this development would happen along Springfield, since most of the defined area is already developed. Traffic may be an issue with 2 or 3 towers in the area though. Would a connection to CPT be required or a flyover to Lag? Then that brings Springfield back into heavy use however.

Palliser has been trying to develop that property for years. Good to see them finally making some headway.

Now would be a great time to fill that lot, there's a lot of work being done that is connecting the exchange to portage near the MTS centre (Alt hotel, the various heritage buildings being redone on donald)
If the giant tiger could be removed and replaced with something a little nicer that would be great too.
I think that lot would be the perfect place for a transit station of some sort... It has a lot of major streets coming in and out. Princess/King, Notre Dame, Ellice, and it's 1 block from Portage. Maybe it's just my wishful thinking -- turn Ellice, King and Princess into part of the BRT or LRT network. How many parking lots get service from those streets?

I don't know how much businesses who front those streets would like it, but all in the name of progress right?

Maybe I'm a little too extreme.

City earmarks $138.6M for rapid transit
(By: Bartley Kives http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/M...-expected-at-announcement-183351001.html)

"The City of Winnipeg plans to set aside $138.6 million over the next three years to extend the Southwest Transitway to the University of Manitoba.

If all funding is in place, construction on the second phase could begin in 2015 and be completed in 2018, said Winnipeg Transit director Dave Wardrop."

TWENTY EIGHTEEN?!?!?!?!!?!?!!? Are they serious? That's ABSOULTELY BULL5H!T!!!!!!!!! What ever happened to having the second phase completed by 2016??? By 2018, the leg to Transconna should be well on it's way. PLEASE let there be an early election for mayor this April!!!!!

I noticed that too. I'm thinking money needed to be freed up for the CPT/Bill Clement parkway extensions that got pushed ahead?? I would think some kind of announcement on those projects would be coming in the new year. Sometime before the next budget. Tis the season.

Perhaps this should be placed in the Rapid Transit thread?

Architecturally, I have always liked this building and the themed Beachcomber Polynesian Restaurant that I remember as a kid. Though, I won't miss it if is replaced with a taller, higher density building connected to the SHED.
