i would love for the winnipeg world trade centre to take space in a heritage building IMHO. would be a more responsible move on their part ie: the old IKON building on main st.

Could that be the new tallest TV alluded to a while back?

This is all great news. Well, great rumours, at any rate!

[Though I suspect that even if Calgary stopped highrise development today and all of Winnipeg's proposed projects were erected tomorrow we would still have a fair ways to go to rival the height or density of Calgary. Sometimes I catch myself thinking that we could give Edmonton a run for their money, though, or at least approach that level in the next decade-ish. Not that a "skyline" necessarily makes or breaks a city, of course....]

Anyways, though I am host to an infantile sense of impatience in regards to developments in this town, I can certainly concede that the next twelve months or so should be pretty damn exciting for us urban geeks!

Plus, I intend to seduce a horrendously wealthy elderly woman and catapult her old bones to Jupiter during the honeymoon, and I have been plotting to use my new billions to construct a new core for our fair city that will make Chicago look like Dryden. True story! Hold your collective breaths.

I wouldn't get my hopes up yet.

Having said that, I seriously hope a new tallest is in the works.

All I can say is there is more exciting, city changing projects in the pipeline right now than I can ever, I mean ever recall. I know they can't all possibly get built because they are really all too big. But if even 10% make it, downtown will be significantly changed in a huge way we here on this board would cream our pants over. It looks like downtown will finally start having some of the worst, eyesore, soul-sucking surface lots disappear.

2010-2020 could really be Winnipeg's time to shine.........nationally.

Haha...I could see us moving into Edmonton-like territory with respect to the high rises. Not Calgary though. With the Human Rights Museum we would have 6 buildings of 100m or more. Edmonton has 14 (I think, however only 4 are taller than Peg's tallest) and Calgary has 56, with more to come.

If we get into 80m+ buildings, the discrepancy is similar.

So I could see us getting into double digits finally (that would be spectacular) but while height is important, density is also something important. Ottawa doesn't even have any buildings taller than we do, but their downtown has some spectacular density...and it "feels" big

Btw...Lenin you haven't done any awesome downtown pics you used to do in a while!

This is my hope too, and the way Winnipeg is developing it certainly points in this direction. Your excitement shows Biff, beyond your usual collected online demeanour, so it's pretty awesome to hear you say this. Here's to 2013 which is just around the corner bringing us some real excitement on the high rise development front. It's about time Winnipeg gets its due in this regard.

I'm gettin all misty eyed lol

Removing as many surface lots as possible would make me amazingly happy, I don't much care how tall the developments are, just as long as those lots die.

Maybe I'm misremembering. Someone definitely brought up a rumour they heard from a reputable source about a possible new tallest. Tall but not big. Maybe it was biff then too? Probably about a year ago.

I don't see how it would be possible. There is no demand for office space at that price and a residential tower would be extremely costly and would need to be 45-50 storeys to be the "new tallest". Finding people to commit to that much expensive space would make it a very slow project to get going, at best.

Here's one I would do if I could. Demolish the "new" section of the Marlborough and replace it with a new hotel of the same size with 15-20 floors of condos above, while restoring the old part of the hotel.

Regardless of whether it is or isn't going to happen, perhaps instead of constantly being Mr. Negative and saying "no no no", perhaps maybe just let us keep the discussion going. It's nice to have this amount of good news right around Christmas time. I'll enjoy seeing whatever plays out over the next few years, tallest or no tallest. But comon man, it's the holiday season. Leave the grinch persona at home and just let us enjoy the speculation, and hell even join in with us in the fun, key word being "fun"

As much as I HATE that addition I'd rather see that parking lot across the street filled. It would help connect the exchange to portage, right now theres a few rather annoying parking lots that separate that part of the exchange and portage and that lot is the worst.

Now would be a great time to fill that lot, there's a lot of work being done that is connecting the exchange to portage near the MTS centre (Alt hotel, the various heritage buildings being redone on donald)
If the giant tiger could be removed and replaced with something a little nicer that would be great too.

Agreed.

My most hated lot is an old church site north of the Marlborough, at smith and ellice. Really breaks up the flow between the Exchange and Portage.

Geez I swear I didn't mean to copy that!

There's a nice red brick building underneath that giant tiger sign. They made it look cheap and nasty on purpose.
