Because I am in a trolling mood, here is the latest think piece from Algernon Cash:

Quote:
Opinion | Winston-Salem has everything needed to become a film destination — except one thing

By Algenon Cash

Economic development is often measured by the factories a community recruits, the corporate headquarters it lands or the next billion-dollar investment announced with elected officials standing behind ceremonial shovels.

Film production rarely enters that conversation.

It should.

A film production does more than create entertainment. It creates jobs for electricians, carpenters, caterers, truck drivers, security personnel, accountants, hotel workers and countless others. Crews rent vehicles, book hotel rooms, eat in local restaurants and spend money throughout communities that otherwise might never experience that level of private investment.

Film is more than culture. It is commerce.

I recently spoke with Rebecca Mills, executive director of the Piedmont Triad Film Commission, after North Carolina lawmakers approved changes to the state’s film incentive program. While she welcomed the legislation as a step forward, she said it still leaves much of the state at a competitive disadvantage when trying to attract larger productions.

Her concern is not that Charlotte or Wilmington should receive fewer opportunities. Instead, she argues that Winston-Salem, Greensboro and many rural communities deserve a stronger chance to compete.

“It’s business,” Mills said. “It’s big, big business, and it creates well-paying jobs.”

That's right. These beer rights move around, too. WFU's previous beer was brewed by R&D Brewing out of Raleigh, which also held the rights to co-branded beers for App State, NC State, ECU, and the Carolina Hurricanes. I think all of those arrangements (except maybe the Canes) have ended.

Before R&D, App State had an arrangement with Boone-based AMB, and NC State had a beer called Old Tuffy, brewed by New Belgium out of Asheville. Since neither of those schools still appear on the R&D website, I think they've moved on to another brewer or have discontinued co-branded beers.

This is all a side effect of stadiums opening up beer sales, combined with NIL and revenue sharing models as college sports continue to professionalize.

Foothills has not generally done a lot of co-brands. Fiddlin' Fish does quite a few, but their distribution isn't nearly as wide as Foothills or any of the big brewing concerns. Off the top of my head, I recall co-brands they've done with the Thunderbirds, the Disco Turkeys, the High Point Rockers, and the WFU NIL collective (separate from any deal the university had with R&D). I think they even had a co-brand deal with Piedmont Craftsman or one of the other local arts groups.

I guess when Fiddlin Fish did "Roll the Quad" it wasn't an official partnership?

600 unit 55+ community coming. Curious what you all think of the 55+ communities? This one coming and 4th & Green are all I know of. We have a good medical system in the area, but is this a step in the right direction? From the Journal https://archive.ph/mCDdk

This is great! This area is a huge retirement magnet and needs to build housing accordingly.

I really hope this vacant lot at Fourth and Broad is developed soon. Broad Street really needs to be fully revamped into a walkable, inviting urban streetscape.

That was the beer I mentioned that shared proceeds with the WFU NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) collective. No deal with the university itself, as I understand it.

Agreed. Going all the way back to when the condos at Fourth and Broad were built there was a plan to convert Broad into a tree lined two-way street with wide sidewalks, bike lanes, etc, but it never materialized. My understanding is the condo developers felt they were misled about those improvements happening. Now that Broad doesn’t even have an exit onto 421 it makes even more sense to convert that section to a more pedestrian friendly corridor and slow traffic through the area. I’d like to see those improvements move forward and while they are being completed bury the power lines. Would further transform the area that has become a hub of residential for downtown.

NCSA creates a nice lil skyline from Salem neighborhood. I feel the City really doesn’t adequately leverage being the home of NCSA. It should be a huge part of the City’s identity.

op Hollywood trade publication has named the Filmmaking School at the UNC School of the Arts one of the best in the nation for the fifth year in a row.

UNCSA was ranked No. 8 in The Hollywood Reporter's annual list of Top 25 American Film Schools, two spots higher than last year. The school has been ranked among the top 10 for the last five years by The Hollywood Reporter, UNCSA announced Friday in a news release.

The University of Southern California was ranked No. 1.

I wonder why they dropped the plans to convert Broad to a two-lane street.

Snowstorms aren’t a good match for NASCAR winter events

NASCAR’s Cook Out Clash will not return to Winston-Salem’s Bowman Gray Stadium for a third year, according to multiple news reports.

I have long thought and advocated on these kind of message boards that Winston should have a state of the art film studio. That kind of investment would leverage the UNCSA brand and give the students a way to participate in the movie making process in a real world kind of way, along with providing an economic and PR boost to the city.

I always thought a great location for it would be between City Yard Drive and the Salem Creek Greenway, which could be expanded into a multi-use pathway that connects the studio to the school. It would also provide a southern anchor to the IQ and Old Salem. The only thing on that lot right now are a couple of old city owned maintenance buildings.

I didn't read the Cash article as I find him to be insufferable and the definition of "all hat no cattle". But if he pushes for a studio then I think he is correct in that regard.

Agreed as well - so let’s do it!
