Could you be any more hyperbolic?

Like, did a cyclist steal your girlfriend, or beat you up or something?

There’s so many other more pressing issues to be concerned about or upset about the government “wasting money” on in this city and province, yet like a lightning rod, you focus so much energy and rage on the issue of bike lanes… it’s pathetic lol

Some people are so upset about “empty bike lanes” but don’t seem to care at all about funding the solutions needed to fill up those bike lanes.

If we want to see the bike lanes of Saint John filled up, then we need to invest in and fund a robust and affordable bike sharing program.

Imagine how convenient and it could be to live in the North End and be able to affordably rent a bike from an automated station on Main Street (or Chesley) , ride it Uptown, and drop it off at a station Uptown. No worrying about getting your bike stolen, just a healthy and affordable means of transportation.

That’s the type of solution we need to stop yours and others constant complaints about the bike lanes…

This is my understanding of this. Red is what they are suggesting, and the green is what already exists. Most traffic would be coming from uptown, so I am struggling to see how the red is an improvement. Unless they think there is a high demand for north to west/west to north cycling???

I really don't see the value in this, not to mention that with the gradient of that hill, it's not a safe or appropriate location for bicycles.

Might be a bit superfluous, but it would hardly be “psychotic” as our resident cycling opponent has put it. lol

Personally, I’d rather see the money this additional bike lane would cost go towards funding a bike sharing pilot program… but how much money we even talking for this proposed bike lane?

The North End could be one of the most convenient locations to live in the city as both a pedestrian and cyclist, and I don’t think the city should be constantly criticized for investing in things like bike lanes. ( Not saying that’s you btw, because it’s not).

It’s simply incredulous how some people frame the issue of bike lanes in this city.

Didn't grab a picture, but the new North End school is coming along nicely. It took me by surprise when I came down Somerset St from Millidgeville.

The Appendix was uploaded; perhaps someone was reading my comments.

You can see it on the right-hand side of the page here - https://shapeyourcitysaintjohn.ca/north-end-neighbourhood-plan

It is mostly the concepts we saw in a previous document, with some of them cleaned up and tweaked slightly. However, there are a few additional concepts that have not been seen before.

Corner of Victoria and Cunard St. Something is brewing.

I thought this was the unknown development above, but it's actually a block or two away on Elgin St. This might be small, but are we finally seeing some solid infill and development in the north end? I am supportive of townhouse developments such as this and think it's a good fit for the area. It appears to be 3 units per townhouse, for a total of 15.

I have no idea, myself and others have just noticed the construction equipment, so something must be coming.

Just down the street, there is a new proposal for 54 units across three buildings. They need reduced parking spaces and amenities to move this forward. Great first test for the new council.

Are we finally seeing some old North End momentum?

Hopefully it then engages that empty parcel of land across the street from it.
Very excited to see some north-end development. It's got a ton of potential for a vibrant, walkable neighborhood. Throw in some apartments with a few restaurants or shops beneath.

There's suddenly some cool midsize infill projects in the Old North End:
-18-unit modular build at 21 Metcalf
-Victoria & Cunard mystery project
-18-unit church conversion at 6 Douglas Avenue
-15-unit stacked townhouses @ Main & Elgin
-This 54-unit 3-apartment project @ Main & Albert

Really hopeful for them to actually happen. Unlike a lot of SJ vaporware, these are of a realistic scale, and could come online in phases. There also seems to be a huge array of different developers, which increases the odds for success.

It would be cool if the completion of some of these drove other infill- the block between the Main/Albert and Main/Elgin projects could do with similar projects on both its east and west sides.

There's also a substantial restoration of the truly ancient St Peter's ballfield starting this summer. Place 400 has growing occupancy with a motivated new owner.

The question hanging over the ONE is, what's Brideau planning with the gobs of land he's put together? And, to a lesser extent, will the city realize developer interest in the area clearly lies south of Shamrock Park and west of Adelaide, and act accordingly?

100+ units between these projects. That might be small for the city as a whole, but for the old North End, it's notable. I think if you'd said that to someone local ten years ago, they would have laughed. Let's hope it slowly sheds its reputation.

Yes, I believe the city just committed 150K or 175K to the ball field, contingent on the local group raising the rest. It sounds like the Blue Jays may contribute, which would be nice.

Have you posted about Brideau's land before? I can't recall what he owns. Has he developed elsewhere, or does he just hoard it?

Very grumpy about the lack of on site parking. Wonder what they'll say about the 54 units down the street.
I can't believe Bill Pasch, of all people, complained about it. I can forgive local residents who may be less informed, but as a local 'landlord', you'd think he would want to see the area redeveloped rather than left in its current sorry state. That would increase his property values considerably. What does he want, single-family homes?

Both applications received unanimous approval from the PAC.

Keith from Historica was at the meeting last night and is behind the 54-unit development. Great to see them leading the charge in the North End. He also mentioned he is behind the development directly across the street from this proposed one, which is underway.
