Here are a few still images of the latest construction, from the above video, to entice you to watch it:

Sigh. I guess another summer without river pathways around the Hill.

This may be common knowledge, but I'm trying to figure out what that curved structure in the water is? It looks really ugly so I'm sure there's an actual purpose to it lol.

Hydroelectric dam that powers tens of thousands of homes.

Has it always been there?

Edit: I realize I am a dumbass and it has indeed been there for a long time, lol. Since 1909!

Am I correct in thinking it is quite an ugly dam? It's positioned weirdly and the proportions are all wrong!

This one has been there for 110 years. We've had dams at this site since Confederation, and even before.

No worries. We all have blind spots.

Is it an ugly dam? Eye of the beholder I guess. I appreciate the industrial look as a link to the past. Major work has been done around it to give people more access and have a chance to view the falls, much of it completed in 2017 when new power generation infrastructure was built increasing capacity.

Indigenous groups have been calling for its removal for decades, probably more. It's an important piece of infrastructure that provides a significant amount of green energy, so it's not going anywhere.

Well it was never accessible like the way it is now. While there was a viewing area the journey to and from was not as organic. Plus drone footage is a relatively new thing.

It was only about 5 years ago I myself came across the power dam viewing platform.

I don't find it ugly in context of the overall neighbourhood. It has that patina to it. Plus they used some of the timber for the gates as benches and you still have the iron on the end of it. So when your sitting there it's like you have a better connection with what you are seeing.

In comparison there is a section of a half dozen or so gates on the north eastern edge that looks very sterile in comparison. Solid grey steel gates that don't even leak any water like the rest!

I like the old trolleys that trundle along the rail to raise and lower the gates. I suppose you could have electric motors at the top of the gate like the new section but the trolleys seem to do the trick.

It wasn't until about 2017/2018 when the Portage power station was rebuilt did the lookout area start to achieve its current form. Looking at google earth it looks like the last of the boardwalks and lookouts were completed closer to 2020. Then we had Covid stuff. So in essence this place is just starting to become the sum of it's parts and will only get better as the rest of the pieces come into play. Victoria island is getting a major revamp. Eager to see how that will connect to Chaudiere island.

The entire area is a treat tbh. Even just walking up the little Canal towards Mill Street and one of the other generating stations is nice. And from there you can pivot towards Pooleys bridge and the rapids. Or carry on along the river walk under the bluff etc.

So to summarize, that Dam feels like the lynch pin of that entire area. And despite being a river city we can't do much with the shores due to flooding. So this is pretty much the only area in the entire region that has some type of development butting right up to water.

Actually the dam doesn't help much during floods. Every single gate is fully open right now, so it's as good as nothing. In addition to generating hydro power it helps to maintain water levels during droughts though, making water purification plants work.

Would be awesome if they opened the ring dam for public. You can walk across the Hoover Dam after all.

All open right now? I was there on the weekend and was surprised to see 7/8 of the wooden gates closed.. plus the grey steel ones as well. I guess Britannia has flooded since then which is almost normal.

During doors open Ottawa the dam was one of the locations. But you had to register long in advance as it was limited spots. My hope would have been to walk across the dam but that probably would have been an issue. In reality the guided tour probably would have been of the newly built generating stations but I never got the chance to find out. They removed the dam from 2025 locations. I was sure to check early on and was disappointed.

Edit.. I actually had the chance to start the youtube video. All wooden gates are open but not the steel ones. Interesting that so many gates were closed just this Saturday past.

I think it's too late to separate this thread into individual buildings, but how would people feel if we separated the Ontario and Quebec sides?

LOL, I walked down there one day last week when the water first really started to surge, and ran into a fellow Raging Dam Enjoyer who was saying the same thing.

It would take a lot of lawyering and engineering, but imagine an enclosed cage-tube-thingy that you could walk across, especially this time of year. Or, at the other extreme, during low water late in the summer when all the rocks are exposed.

1. Dang - where's that chart from?

2. That flow of water is way, way, way more than the "tourist flow" at Niagara Falls. I think it's on par with the size of the former Muskrat Falls in Labrador, now dammed. It's an amazing amount of water to be able to get close to.

3. Holy crap, that's two "Olympic swimming pool" volumes of water every second.

Devil's hole

Hi everyone, been lurking in this thread for a while and decided to join the conversation.
I've been wondering if anyone has archived these plans when they were released initially. Since there has been quite some stir around Devil's hole in the past few months, I was curious to see how that area was initially planned vs. what's going to become of it.

Much care,

here is the master site plan, which shows bike lanes etc. There is also a "Truss Bridge" plan which is about the same width (76m) of the Bronson Channel crossing and has pipes underneath.

You mean this place? https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9810245&postcount=1774

What's the stir?

In the NCC North Shore plans they have something about re-opening it eventually, but nothing concrete.

Much care,
If you Google for the devapp number "D07-12-14-0075", you'll find that there still are some of the old planning documents available out there.

For example, here's the Phase 1A Planning Rationale for Zibi from August 26, 2015.

Welcome to the forum!
