Well it was never accessible like the way it is now. While there was a viewing area the journey to and from was not as organic. Plus drone footage is a relatively new thing.
It was only about 5 years ago I myself came across the power dam viewing platform.
I don't find it ugly in context of the overall neighbourhood. It has that patina to it. Plus they used some of the timber for the gates as benches and you still have the iron on the end of it. So when your sitting there it's like you have a better connection with what you are seeing.
In comparison there is a section of a half dozen or so gates on the north eastern edge that looks very sterile in comparison. Solid grey steel gates that don't even leak any water like the rest!
I like the old trolleys that trundle along the rail to raise and lower the gates. I suppose you could have electric motors at the top of the gate like the new section but the trolleys seem to do the trick.
It wasn't until about 2017/2018 when the Portage power station was rebuilt did the lookout area start to achieve its current form. Looking at google earth it looks like the last of the boardwalks and lookouts were completed closer to 2020. Then we had Covid stuff. So in essence this place is just starting to become the sum of it's parts and will only get better as the rest of the pieces come into play. Victoria island is getting a major revamp. Eager to see how that will connect to Chaudiere island.
The entire area is a treat tbh. Even just walking up the little Canal towards Mill Street and one of the other generating stations is nice. And from there you can pivot towards Pooleys bridge and the rapids. Or carry on along the river walk under the bluff etc.
So to summarize, that Dam feels like the lynch pin of that entire area. And despite being a river city we can't do much with the shores due to flooding. So this is pretty much the only area in the entire region that has some type of development butting right up to water.
