Canam's post about the architectural canopies at street level:

Quote:
The canopy structure, made from jumbo HSS (or jumbo “Hollow Structural Sections”), was specially designed to support the organic curves of the design. To ensure both structural integrity and aesthetics, each component required extremely precise rolling and fabrication. Then, after being fabricated separately, each section was carefully assembled to ensure that the whole piece was perfectly aligned and in harmony with the other architectural elements of the project. This technical achievement was a challenge not only in terms of design, but also of installation, since we had to use multiple cranes to precisely position each large component.

600 tons of steel. And they are also doing the crown steel work.

US firm that specializes in glass roof structures:

Another one:

They did a 42m long glass roof in Montreal that just uses 18 panels

I have no idea where Apple wants to go since they'll be stuck in a fashion/luxury brand dominated mall.
My prediction is that Apple wants to be in the 'Phase 2' section of the mall, which I believe will be outdoor. This will allow them to have a 'glass like' exterior like at PC or other stores in the US.

Apple is 'stuck' in other high-end malls like Yorkdale, South Coast Plaza, Stanford Shopping Centre, Aventura Mall (Miami) so it's not inconceivable they would do so here.

Another Oakridge Park prediction: I believe that the HBC space is about 140,000 sq. ft. It wouldn't surprise me to see Simons take on 100,000 of that space (given that it was designated to be a department store anyways) and the balance of that space to Eataly and some other retailer or retailers that would like a 2 floor retail space (like Nike or other high end retailers like Gucci).

I know there has been talk about Simons taking on a downtown Vancouver space but I believe Oakridge is a better location. It's roughly equidistant from DT Vancouver and Richmond Center and far enough from Park Royal so as not to cannibalize sales from that location.

Eataly could be a huge draw for Oakridge Park too. They have a couple of options to choose from in Vancouver so I think it's going to boil down to what tenant mix exists where before they make any decisions.

There's zero chance Eataly is opening in Oakridge Park with a Time Out Market there.

Agreed, no Eataly at Oakridge because of TimeOut Market.
But Simons would be a catch and a better retail environment than downtown (wrt theft, security, vandalism, etc.).
It would also introduce a more affordable price point to Oakridge.

There's a spot on Level 2 of Phase 1 that is open to the outdoors (for a prominent frontage)
and for which no tenant has been announced.
I think Apple could be in that space.
I don't think construction of Phase 2 has been announced, so a unit in Phase 2 would still be a ways off.

I forgot about Time Out Market so yes, there's little chance of Eataly opening at Oakridge, although I question whether it's 0%. Downtown seems more likely and they would have a couple of options, depending on what shops take over which locations. In any case, 2026 should be a very interesting year for retail in Vancouver!

The title of that article is funny to me when the entire site still looks like it's years away from completion.

when there in person the mall interior and where safeway etc is look nearly completed. The putside is going to take much longer but the mall from what you can see and if you're inside Crate & Barrel you can hear a lot of noise going on so it's not far off.

I expect a "soft" opening with stores opening gradually over time and having to walk past constuction hoardings to access the mall entrances.
They probably expect a lot of people to take Canada Line or drive and park, so streetfront entrances may not be a priority.
Daily Hive says there will be nightly early station closures til late March 2026 - so it would have to be after that.

I think most of the stores have just started construction in the past few months so I doubt any of them will be ready until late summer.

EDIT: Vancouver Sun says they'll be ready this spring

Active development remains concentrated in the
Vancouver Periphery, where several Oakridge Park
towers are scheduled for completion by Q4 2026,
with more than half their office space still unleased
or unsold. Without additional pre-leasing, the
Periphery could face a significant vacancy spike by
mid-2026

I took this picture on Saturday of the main entrance by the skytrain plaza. The interiors of the mall public spaces look close to completed, driving past the other entrance where the Safeway will be is also visible and it looks near complete too, But I never got a picture of it.

this is from north side of 41Ave next to the old TD

Thanks.
Hopefully it won't be too all white and sterile inside.

It seems like there's lots of plants/art installations but who knows if QuadReal is going to slash the budget for that kind of thing.
