Cheap knock-off LEDs purchased by corrupt Vancouver trying to rip off tax payers perhaps?

Those purple lights you see are decorative ones you see under the skytrain guideway, which Vancouver does not have. They are meant to be purple, or any other colours they are switched to.
"B.C.'s Ministry of Transportation says it has had to replace around two dozen lights on Vancouver Island so far.

And Manitoba Hydro says it has so far replaced close to 1,000 defective street lights in that province, with another 750 likely needing replacement.

The purple glow has also been seen all over the United States, in places like Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska and Kansas."

Surrey has a few blue/purple ones, very random though, not as bad as Vancouver. The airport had a bunch of them in their long term parking, I don't think there are any white ones.

Burnaby residents can out-nimby west side Vancouver if they put their mind to it.

"A proposed non-market rental building in Edmonds Town Centre is drawing opposition from homeowners in the neighbourhood.

The six-storey development with a child-care facility proposed on public land at 7388 Southwynde Ave. would provide affordable housing in a city that has the third worst rents in the country and has been continually losing purpose-built rental housing.

But neighbours in the area criticized the project ... “This six-storey, relative to the other buildings, is going to be like a skyscraper in here,” Verhagen added. “What is that going to impact the rest of the neighbourhood in terms of property values and everything long-term?

I won't even bother with a rebuttal to those resident's claims, nothing they said makes any sense.

I live near this and remember some of my neighbours being cranky about the new housing (that this Nimby is living in). TBF they did have a point as the developer said the tree line wouldn't change and we wouldn't be able to see the buildings and that was a lie. I doubt many of them bothered to complain to the city about it.

Quote:
At a public hearing on June 27, city council heard neighbours’ complaints, including concerns about losing green space, traffic congestion, impacting “residential peace,” concerns the daycare would cause overcrowding on the street and a loss of parking, and concerns about altering “community character.”
Excuse as I start laughing uncontrollably now. There are two protected greenbelts and next to no traffic - adding this building is not going to suddenly turn the area into the middle of a big city. Also if these people bothered to check they'd see that there are multiple co-ops in the area and it hasn't caused chaos and / or people trying to flee to somewhere better.

Honestly my only concern is more people picking the remaining wild blackberries.

Nimbys are everywhere, but at least the Burnaby City council is still making huge progress to increase high-density housing neighbourhoods in the last decade or so. Level-headed planners working for the people probably know more residents are with them compared to the loud minority who are against any form of development. Good job overall!

Come on Sheba, as everyone knows very well with more daycare centers come more traffic congestion, parking chaos, overcrowding on streets and environmental devastation. Total Disaster!!!

Those little rambunctious tots running around and and driving their little mini-buggies and doing what kids are known to do....

Anarchy!!!
It's the end of civilization as we know it.

And don't even get me started on the diapers.
Someone better get a Hazmat unit here. STAT!

I just checked the article and:
Quote:
Metro Vancouver Housing, the regional government’s non-profit housing corporation, wants to build 122 rental units and a child-care facility with space for 37 children, according to a staff report.

...

The project includes one adaptable studio, 52 one-bedrooms (22 adaptable), 56 two-bedrooms (all adaptable), and 14 three-bedrooms (all adaptable).
How many of those child care spaces will be used by people living in the building? Oh the horror - people having to walk out of the building and then back in through another (child care) door! How long before the sidewalk needs to be replaced from all that walking!

Oh dear - I just read the submissions on this oh-so-scary afford building.

I kid you not:
Quote:
Building non-market rental units will bring crime, drugs and other destructive consequences to this peaceful neighbourhood. We don't want our children to grow under such environment, we don't want our home to become another downtown east side!
Also:

As we know non-market rental units are often associated with crimes and drugs.
I get that people don't want a taller building next door (double the number of storeys than the existing buildings) and more people moving into their little secluded enclave ... but man some of the submissions are crazy over the top freakouts. At least there are some more balanced ones and even some support. I hope the city goes ahead with it.

What a bunch of horrible, horrible people casting stereotypes and inventing harms that won't exist. The city should make it a 12 story development instead.

I know... There are a few co-ops in the area and I live next door to one of them. I can't think of a single instance of crime or drug problems (and this is in over 20 yeas of living here).

Rezoning for Phase 1 was submitted last month and now we have renders from the public hearing material.

you must have moved in after they cleaned up the hood. The cheapest places to buy in the city was Edmonds wood frame. kingsway south of value village was rough. Sex providers, drugs being sold on the corners. empty store fronts.

I can see why the area residence are concerned.

Except this isn't just south of Edmonds and Kingsway - it's south of Edmonds Station (and about 1.5k away). A quick look shows their building was constructed about 2009, which would make it much later after cleaning up the area. So no - they're being hysterical Nimbys.

I talked to a couple of my neighbours yesterday and they thought it would be in Byrne Woods Park (dedicated parkland). When I said it was just the corner next to the existing housing they were fine with it, along with it being affordable housing with child care. Their only issue was with it being 6 storeys and figure the city is proposing that so they have something to walk back after the inevitable freakout over it.

OK, so that context makes it make more sense.

I like the sound of this: "they cleaned up the hood".
