My point is it doesn't matter who carries the story, or who their readers are. It will still receive the same amount of complaints. For whatever reason many people think a comment section is for pissing and moaning. I often get sucked into reading comment sections and always leave with a headache and a lower IQ lol.

It’s interesting I think Bernard Devoto used to write a lot about Utahns, particularly Mormon Utahns like this. There’s always been this weird desire to be consciously perceived as abnormal, insular, unique and obscure, but simultaneously as global, connected, and relevant. I didn’t grow up Mormon, but it seems to me the LDS church itself displays a lot of this behavior on an institutional level, and nearly anyone who’s spent enough time around church members will know exactly what I’m talking about

I read those comments and was taken aback by their idiocy. However, ahem, the majority do not strike me as conservative in any way shape or form. They are mostly about the need for affordable housing and that these are too highly priced for the average person and that the legislature is to blame because they are all rich developers looking out for rich people. I would venture to say those kinds of comments come from a certain segment on the left of the dial.

Agreed. I'm not sure what percentage of their READERS is conservative vs liberal, but the comments section is clearly dominated by people with a more liberal mindset......in almost every news story. It's the same on Twitter and Reddit.

Lol. Just saw an article on Facebook concerning Astra Tower. The Facebook comments were all over the place, but almost exclusively anti astra Tower. Complaints included the following:

-there's no parking!
-it's just luxury apartments!
-greedy capitalist pigs!
-this is the fault of the LDS church!
-our poor town is turning into california!
-this sucks! I have fond memories of that Carl's jr!

I'm not sure if it's officially opened. A few observations:

- There's still a few construction cones around the outside of the building in various places.

- There was a janitor inside cleaning the lobby.

- It looks like 3 of the top 4 floors are being finished. All the other floors still look unfinished.


None of that means the building is or isn't officially opened, but that's what I noticed.

Really? Not buying the argument that only liberals are voicing their opinions on ksl.

Geographically if we look at voting spatial patterns cities in the US are dominated by liberals which by association indicates they would be more involved in city issues like skyscraper development. Conservatives on the other hand dominate the outer suburbs and rural areas, and by association are not as involved in cities urban development or issues. So maybe you’re right the liberals are dominating this particular ksl comment section since they live in Salt Lake and are concerned about development issues. Or, maybe the conservatives are making comments who don’t live in the city and do not understand why the downtown development is needed. Probably a mix of both sides in reality. Now a sweeping claim that Twitter, Reddit and ksl comments are dominated by liberals...don’t you think the comments would be dominated by the side that is interested in the issues? A conservative Reddit thread for example would be dominated by conservatives.

I didn't say only liberals are voicing their opinions on KSL. I said the comment section is dominated by liberal-minded people. There are still plenty of conservative voices, but I'd say the majority are on the left of the spectrum (from what I've observed, at least).

Yeah, you might be right. But even on Twitter and Reddit, liberal voices and topics tend to dominate the platforms. That's not to say conservatives are absent from them, just that they clearly don't constitute the majority.

Anyway, I'm going to back down because I'm getting off topic.

I believe that there should be a height moratorium of around 500’ for SLC to preserve sight-lines to the mountains and conversely to the lake if you’re looking the other way. Being so close to the Wasatch is one of the defining natural feature of SLC. Ensuring that, to the best of our abilities, we preserve peoples ability to enhance their lives through appreciation of nature we should make those efforts.
I do not think we should sacrifice our appreciation of the natural environment for the built environment.

Ya respectfully, I don't agree with this at all. Reason 1 the mountains have almost 7k ft vertical rise from SLC. You may lose site from a few close by angles, but you aren't gonna block them in skyline views, even with a super tall tower.

Reason 2, the mountains behind SLC are the reason it has the potential to have one of the country's best skylines. No city is as close to as majestic of peaks as SLC, so we should utilize that aspect and build an iconic skyline that will forever be next to the best backdrop in the country. Like I said the mountains are too close and too tall they will still appear in the backdrop, even the Burj Khalifa would be dwarfed by them.

I hear you. But the people in the city deserve to have views as well. Not just marketing materials?
Also, views to the lake from the east side of SLC are being diminished/lost as well. I just don’t see the value in a skyline taking precedence over the natural beauty of the landscape. The two can live in tandem, but it will take a concerted effort to strike the right balance. To a certain extent, preservation of these views for the most people possible in the city is a quality of life issue.
