Nice photos, scottharding! Wow, the CCH really is a slim-looking building from that angle. Very sleek. Liberty Sky is actually growing on me a bit, the more I see it. I still don't love it, but I don't hate it as much as I did.

State street is going to officially be an urban canyon when Astra goes up. I agree with the comments about the recent (redundant) rooftop lighting features. Would love to see more of this or this. I'm curious to see what the CCH does for exterior lighting. Wasn't the CCH supposed to have a giant screen at one point? Is that still happening?

I love what they did with the exterior lighting in this rendering of the Regent Street tower, but it may just be an artistic flair:

Reeder, I was thinking the same thing about Liberty. I really like how 95 So. State and the CCH turned out. Those two Towers together with the upcoming West Quarter II and Astra are going to make some pretty postcard shots from the iconic northwest angle. I think if the shot is angled just right they will all be in the photo.

Honestly, I feel like if they just threw two coats of gray paint on the exposed concrete on Liberty Sky, it would look substantially better.
And I still maintain that if they made those wider concrete slabs in green walls, it would suddenly be one of the most attractive buildings in the city.

Yeah, I agree. It wouldn't take much to spruce it up. I guess it's all subjective.

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City's skyline is about to change in a drastic way.

With the driving of a few golden shovels, Salt Lake City leaders and developers broke ground on the Astra Tower, a new 40-story building that is slated to be the state's tallest structure, during a ceremony Wednesday. The skyscraper, which is expected to top out near 450 feet in height, is expected to add over 350 "luxury" apartment units to downtown Salt Lake City by the time it's completed in 2024.

"Salt Lake City is in ascension — economically, socially, statistically. We're experiencing unprecedented growth," said Dee Brewer, the executive vice president of the Salt Lake Chamber and executive director of the Downtown Alliance. "Astra Tower is a remarkable illustration of our city's ascension."

The Astra Tower will be located on the northeast corner of 200 South and State Street, where an old fast food restaurant stood until it was torn down last year. The Kensington Investment Company purchased the 0.69-acre parcel in 2018.

The plan calls for 685,000 square feet of building area, which will include parking levels, retail space and 377 apartment units. The units will include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom options, as well as two levels of "exclusive penthouse units," according to Kensington.

I do like the Convention Center Hotel but I do wish it was 100 feet taller. Of course, I can say that about pretty much every high-rise downtown lol

I thought i read in a post many, many ago, something about SLC requiring buildings to have interesting crowns. (Not neccessarily lighted crowns). Could someone in the know confirm or deny that?

Yes, this is an older version of it. The newest version we have seen also incorporates the small lot on the other side of Plum Alley and is a few stories taller (maybe 375 ft). HKS is still the architect though.

I checked the article's comment section fully expecting to see nothing but complaints and negativity. I wasn't wrong. Seems like Utahns would rather we continue our march to consume the entire valley via sprawl, while increasing our environmental degradation, rather than build a downtown residential tower that will "ruin the views of the mountains" as some have said. God forbid a Carl's jr is turned into a place where people live and where their spending supports the local businesses in the area. No, let's build more suburban shopping centers and give our money to Walmart instead.

90% of the people in the KSL comments don't even set foot downtown except to see the Temple or go to a Jazz game (where they'll surely still find something to complain about). The opinions of people in the KSL article are worth about as much as my opinion on fashion lol (as in, not worthwhile at all). The SLTrib had the right idea in disabling comments. They don't add anything of value.

When it comes to towers, my only concern is what it's replacing. If it's something historical, that offers a level of character to the city, I'll bitch. If it's a fucking vacant lot or a building that used to be the worst Carl's Jr in America (no joke, it was rated as such I'm pretty sure), why the fuck would anyone complain about that?

I don't go downtown to look at the mountains. I can see the mountains every other goddamn place in the valley.

Utahns are a contradictory lot. They simultaneously want to be liked and known as a destination and yet complain whenever something is done about it - whether it's people from outside moving here or developments like this. It's a weird fucking disconnect and frankly, the most annoying thing about the people of this state.

Your last comment is very true. I sometimes fall into that category. It’s kinda strange. Besides the LDS culture, which I am not, I think the geographical isolation may have something to do with it. Hell, I’m not even from here but I want outsiders to take note of Utah and SLC but then miss the days of old as well. Human nature I guess. Good observation because it’s very prevalent

It's not just a Utah thing, or a certain group in Utah thing, it happens literally everywhere. Complainers (haters) flock to comment sections regardless of topic, location, or platform. I think you would be surprised how many people are actually excited about a new tallest but you would never know it because they are not your typical commenters on a news article.

Oh absolutely hence me saying that comments sections never add anything useful these days. But I do think that KSL appeals to a particular, ahem, demographic that is very conservative and suburban-oriented.
