While I doubt Stratford will be getting a Walmart, they could really use a Superstore.

Stratford needs some sort of “core”, even if they were to take the approach used in the Dartmouth Crossing design/layout, which mixed big box into a town centre type layout.

The lack of planning here drives me nuts. We end up with these unwalkable areas that look like crap.

Bridgewater N.S. population 8500 has a Walmart Supercentre,
Woodstock N.B. population 5228 has a Walmart,
Yarmouth N.S. population 6518 has a Walmart,
Kentville N.S. population 6271 has a Walmart,

Stratford, PEI 10,000+, no Walmart.

See what is going on here. Don't say never. It may come.

those places are the major population centers for their area, with nothing nearby. Stratford doesnt have one because the charlottetown one is 5 minutes away.

Sorry, I guess, but look! Sydney N.S., city proper of 31,597 (2011), has three Walmarts in that metro area. And Walmart isn't 5 minutes away, it's on the north side of Charlottetown far away from Stratford and residences of Kings County.

The population of Charlottetown in the 2016 census was 36,094; this forms the centre of a census agglomeration of 69,325.

Sydney is part of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, with a total population exceeding 100,000 people. Metro Sydney is larger than metro Charlottetown

You have to look at more than just population, economy has a big role to play. For some reason, PEI seems to have a large disposable income. I have no idea where people are coming up with the money (probably debt) but the big box stores here are always jam packed. Costco would make a mint in Charlottetown. The argument that we are willing to drive to Moncton is valid, but I’m sure Costco would rather have the bridge toll in their till.

Why must you constantly put down other places? Whether it is Halifax, Saint John or Charlottetown?

Cape Breton has a population of 130,000 and has 4 Walmart's. PEI has a population closing in on 160,000 and has 2 Walmart's. Northern NS (Amherst, New Glasgow, Truro, Antigonish, etc) has a population of about 147,500 (10,000 less than PEI) and has 4 Walmart's.

I do not shop for groceries any more at the Charlottetown Walmart because they NEVER have stock. They are constantly sold out of items I buy.

If you can get to the Charlottetown Walmart in 5 minutes from Stratford, I'll give you $1000.

1) - I never put down Charlottetown. I'm from Charlottetown originally. About 5-7 years ago, there was nobody from Charlottetown posting in the forum and I singlehandedly kept the thread alive until braymondg came along. I'm simply pointing out facts. Metropolitan Sydney (CBRM) is larger than metropolitan Charlottetown. It is a fact. For the record though, I think Charlottetown could support a second Wal-Mart, and Stratford could be a possible location. The kicker is whether or not the population on the south side of the Hillsborough River is large enough to form a base of support.

2) - I haven't said anything ill regarding Saint John in years. A long time ago, there were some people who posted on the Saint John thread who were very bitter about Moncton and perceived favouritism from the province, but they have moved on, and there is no longer any sparring going on at all. I wish Saint John well.

3) - I also don't have any ill will towards Halifax. I lived there for nine years. There was a time when there was an intense rivalry between Halifax and Moncton forumers over concerts and the CFL, but this too has passed. I will post on the Halifax threads, and occasionally my posts could be perceived as being negative, but I am familiar enough with the city to be able to comment both positively and negatively regarding developments in that city. Slavish boosterism is not helpful and occasionally failings and ill advised decisions have to be pointed out.

4) - And to that point, I am also not a slavish booster of Moncton either. I live here, and comment on all positive development news, but if there is a problem, I speak up about it. I don't know if you look at the Moncton threads at all, but, for example, I have made many comments regarding the booting issue in the Hub City...........

My God MonctonRad, what did you do to everyone, they're out to get you.

I never heard so much desire to have a Walmart built. Just a company that takes money out of the local economy and pays poor wages.

The more you post, the more likely it is that you may say or do something which could offend someone.

At least I didn't use red typeface and italics in my response.

I agree. I virtually never frequent Walmart, and my annual spending in that particular chain probably never exceeds $100. Walmart is as much of a threat to local retail as is online shopping.

As far as market penetration is concerned, billy1 seemed offended that there were only two Walmarts on PEI. FWIW, there are only two Walmarts in greater Moncton, and the Moncton CMA population is ~155,000, virtually identical to PEI's. The Moncton version of Stratford is Riverview, which has a population of 20,000 and no Walmart, so it isn't really surprising that Stratford doesn't have one.

Does Riverview deserve a Walmart? Could Stratford support a Walmart? Maybe. The main question is why on Earth would they want one.........

Seemed offended that PEI only has 2 Walmarts?? Are you freaking serious??

You constantly go on other forums and compare the forum city to Moncton !!

And you are doing it again in your post above !! I've seen your post in the Halifax forums constantly saying Moncton could do anything Halifax can and possibly do it better !

To be fair to MonctonRad, The Riverview/Moncton analogy fits pretty well population wise. And he uses what he's more familiar with. Similar how I would use comparisons for Saint John, as that's the region I'm most familiar with.

I also understand that Moncton is essentially turning into the most desirable location (outside of Halifax) to live in the Maritimes. There's lots of expansion ongoing, it's pretty central to all NW Nova Scotia, PEI, Northern NB, it has integrated the French and English as well as you could ask for.

I wish you the best in PEI, just dream better than a Walmart, they just act as a vortex of poor community.

Sorry, I wasn't paying close enough attention. It was Siriusb who was being the Walmart booster, not you. My apologies.

Siriusb was comparing other communities to Stratford and to Charlottetown to justify why Charlottetown should have a second Walmart. My post was made in reference to his as a form of a rebuttal. I don't necessarily apologize for this. Comparisons can be useful during debates.

Again, while I sometimes make reference to Moncton in posts on the Halifax forum, I don't attempt to be overtly inflammatory, and if it seems that way, it is only because I am teasing them about their "centre of the universe" attitude WRT the rest of the Maritimes. Things have been much more civil than they were 5-7 years ago. In many ways you are dredging up ancient history.

Thanks NB_ExistsToo. No one here was dreaming about a Walmart though. We were talking about a possible location in Stratford.

I welcome everyone to talk about Charlottetown in this forum, however it should be kept to Charlottetown/Summerside and not a comparison to other places.
Lots of expansion going on in Charlottetown too. Stratford ended the year with 75 million in permits and Charlottetown was close to 150 million. Not sure on Cornwall, but I know they had some big apartments/condos and institutional stuff built last year.

I do not see this "Center of the Universe" with Halifax. I do however see it with another place with many forumers.....
