Hey it’s a nice building, but it cost hundreds of millions, and after a few weeks when all the fan fare dies down it will be an expensive drop in centre.

Also you should know that the Montreal main library was shut down for a while due to a bed bug ingestion from homeless people. If you go there in a month or soul, make sure you have a shower when you get home.

Snohetta knocked it out of the park with this one. Like the Peace Bridge (which I suspect some on this forum still think would be better as rope bridge) the new library is going to be an icon for the city and will generate a ton of international attention. These days, it seems like a lot of calendar architecture is pretty but useless -- like pretty well everything Daniel Liebskind has ever managed to complete. This building is a beautiful response to the site and purpose. It'll win awards.

And yeah, the occasional homeless person will certainly come in to warm up and read a newspaper. That's not a bad thing.

People are certainly asses on this forum, but they aren't who you think. All the usual libtard types are blinded by the excitement of a shiny new building - one that cost $245Million, and to do what again? Oh yeah, house a few books. Who cares if the building looks good if nobody's going to use it.

Uses the word 'libtard' = definitely an ass in my book.

Nobody will use it? The CPL is only the second busiest library system in Canada, and 6th in North America, but sure, no one will use the brand new central branch. Sure.

My take on the library: nice building, but waste of money.

in your vernacular, its clear for all to see you are the "tard" here.

of course you have no use for a library.

the 11th century says they dont miss you...

Beautiful building, but a new library building in the digital age is the apex of city council's self indulgent hedonism. And the tourists will be lining up to see it.

Self indulgent hedonism. Excellent way to describe a 250 million dollar building that holds books.

Actually you're the one missing the point. We were already the second busiest when we had the old central branch that nobody used. It's because our suburban branches are busy. This building is an ode to a group of self indulgent asshat councilors who don't understand finances.

Clearly misinformed and obviously will remain that way.

I doubt that very much. My point was simple, we really didn't need the new library.

The building looks nice but people need to realize that the main reason (only reason?) it was build was to help give the East Village another boost. If the city truly wanted to help out library users they would have built more suburban branches and pumped more money into digital assets.

I agree 100%. This isn’t really about a library or the library system, it’s about a bunch of counsellors who are trying to build up the inner city at any cost. In this case $255 Million.

Just returned from new library. There was a continuously moving line to get in that snaked down from the entrance up to 7th and back down to 9th avenue. Probably 1000 people. There was easily 5000 people inside.

I will be curious to see if there’s any numbers in the news of total visitors so far a few days in.

No, we don’t need the new library.

Don’t even respond if your BS is going to be “Today, but in a week it’ll be empty and just homeless people.” You people can take a hike back to Costco.

I love your preemptive statement telling someone not to respond if they’re going to give a certain answer. Sorry but that’s a poor strategy for trying to win an argument. You already know what the other persons argument is so you’re trying to suppress that a had a time LOL.

Doesn’t matter how you look at it, you and I both know that in a week or two or a month or two there won’t be any crowds. The only people there will be homeless losers spreading bed bugs.

Continue to stand on the sidelines in a fog, spewing slurred words and spitting nonsense. Oh wait, maybe the library is a place for you. It could certainly be good for your intellect.

Could it be that 'no one' (personally, I think this is extreme hyperbole, but whatever) used it because the old place was a dump?

And why does everything have to be about money, anyway? Public services like the library are never going to be profitable, but that doesn't mean they should be neglected.
