I don't recall Brodsky's. Are you sure it wasn't Gatsby's?
That's the name, when they were taking down the Gatsby's sign, there was the outline of the Victory Lounge sign. I recall going there in the late 70's for drinks, it was like a bar for business folks, never too busy, and sort of interesting.

Certainly, thank-you!

I'm all for the preservation of all stone / brick buildings and restoration of signage when attractive.

You raise some interesting points about what "authentic" heritage is. It's definitely a tough line to walk. Especially when you consider that the nature of a city is to change, and heritage preservation shouldn't be about stopping change, but allowing the narrative of the evolution of a place to be read in the physical manifestations of its culture (at least, that's how I try to think of it). Sometimes, it makes sense to restore a building to its state at a particularly important time in (its, the city's, the province's or the nation's) history to enhance the story of a place.

I think the building was known as the Jerusalem Warehouse at a point in its life before the upper brick storeys (where the sign band is/was) were added. If that's the case, it definitely makes sense that the sign band say Morse's Teas, but the heritage plaque say Jerusalem Warehouse.

Work is moving along above grade now. And for some reason the scaffolding has come down from the Barrington sidewalk. I assume something will replace it very soon. Hopefully something a bit more attractive with a rendering of the building perhaps?

So... all this time I was thinking the new highrise on Barrington was residential. But it's actually a new office building?? That's kind of... awesome.

There have been a few different iterations of the proposal. Initially it was all office but now I think it's mostly residential. There still may be some office space on the lower floors; not sure. Many residential buildings in the city have a bit of office space on the lower floors.

The diagrams page just says office. Perhaps someone needs to update it to mixed use.

The most recent documents show:

ground floor and second floor as retail space
3rd floor to 6th floor as parking area(elevators for vehicles to get here)
7th floor up will be residential.

The drawings I have show a date of May this year

Plan unveiled for 'unique' 22-storey condo-retail building in Halifax

This article unveils less than the title suggests but:

-22% of units are sold; the smallest ones are almost sold out
-Scheduled completion Spring 2017 (upper floors are expected to go up much faster than the first few)

And in other Barrington / Starfish news:

-Beacon Securities is locating at 1592 Barrington
-A 'prominent restaurant' will be announced for Espace, which is now almost 100% full.
-Urban Outfitters is apparently doing well

"Prominent restaurant" sounds like "chain restaurant". Chain retailers are one thing, but I can't think of a franchise restaurant that's much good.

I've been waiting for the Earl's/Cactus Club/Joey/whatever upscale casual onslaught to hit Halifax.

That's exactly what I was thinking of; the western Canadian casual fine-dining thing. It's been creeping westward for a few years... just hit Ontario fairly recently.
