I found that in 1938 the plan was to have it come through the back of the exchange district and connect at or around Portage and Main

http://www.mmcalumni.ca/v2/docs/ew/Disraeli%20Bridge%20Plans%20-%201%20-%20November%201938.pdf

and the same plan came up in 1949

Local restaurateur to reopen revolving restaurant

A city landmark and iconic restaurant location will be opening its doors once again after a four-year hiatus.

Restaurateur Noel Bernier, who owns Hermanos Steakhouse and Wine Bar and Corrientes Argentine Pizzeria, will be finalizing negotiations to reopen the revolving restaurant at the Fort Garry Place later this month. The restaurant is set to open in October 2013

There is an earthern berm in the floodway entrance that does not allow river water to enter the floodway until the level reaches about 15 feet above James Avenue datum. This is to stop large pieces of ice entering the floodway, possibly causing an ice jam. Plugging up the floodway with ice during a flood is bad - plus, bridges over the floodway are not designed for ice impact.

To be used to help control summer river levels, an inlet control structure would have to built. Many river property owners have been lobbying for this for years, but now that it is acknowledged that summer flooding has a large economic impact of the city, people are starting to listen. I'm sure it will be built but not in my lifetime.

The St. Andrews dam doesn't affect river levels, except of course when the dam is closed. The reason the river floods is that because the country is so damn flat the river can't get out of its own way.

I think it was Al Golden who threatened to bring a few Drott excavators in to remove the earth plug during one of the first high water summers.

This is when the provincial conservation dept was not acting as fast as Winnipeger's wanted to use the floodway in the summer.

I grew up in Vermette MB now part of Winnipeg, one of the things we as kids used to do all the time was canoe up and down from the PLUG by the red to 59 hwy overpass, the channel then was an actual river, it had fish in it and everything, as we used to fish in it. What they did since the widening, was fill that same channel in with ROCK, Tyndal stone to be exact. Not if all that was done was leave it as it was and just widen it, you could boat down it without even opening the plug, but filling it in was a mistake. Do not confuse what it looks like per say from HWY 1 bridge and north, it is very different in the south end. btw I can on any given day, besides a flood, drive my 4x4 right through to the other side, no water EVER touches my tires and even when there is water, well it is only a few feet deep at best.

As for the Aquifer, more of an excuse then a reason. The Red is in that Aquifer as it is deeper then the floodway, now we dump human waste in it and all the chemicals from the farms etc, and whatever the USA dumps in it. So you are honestly going to say having that same water go down the floodway is going to do more damage then it all ready is?

Not a mistake at all. It was necessary, even though you don't like it. There are engineering reasons.

The aquifer varies in depth from one place to another. In the Bird's Hill area it is somewhat closer to the surface and is considered pristine. The floodway WAS going to be deepened but because of this area it was decided to widen it instead. It would have cost half the amount to deepen it than widen it.

We had 15 flooding summers in a row, save for one in those 15 years. Last summer was our first break in a long time. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

This plan actually starts at Ness Ave and goes to Taylor. The plan depending on funding is to rework the St James Bridge as well. The budget will likely be north of $150 million. Of course, as every one knows, this whole project hinges on the finalization of the Kapyong ownership mess. The city has been quietly acquiring properties for 3 or 4 years for this project. When the Safeway on Ness was rebuilt the City acquired a slice off the corner of their property for this purpose.

Apparently they had the tower lights on at the CMHR last night......the real tower lights (not construction lights). Did anyone see this?

Yes, they were on this morning on my way to work. It was the same lights they were testing before Christmas for a couple days IIRC. It's nice but kind of underwhelming...

that route would be a disaster, I was merely talking about putting a freeway along cpr tracks beside logan. If cpr relocates to centre port.

That does look nice, but it is a little underwhelming

Won't be the only lit part of the museum I'm assuming though so maybe the whole thing together will look nice

Also happy 2013 everyone!

I have to agree. I hope that's just a preview showing cause it doesn't even look like LED lights. Its a bit underwhelming. I was hoping for something that would change colors and have sequence, something like they just did to the Empire State Building (Here's a video link to see it ----> http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnew...g-shows-off-its-new-lighting-system.html) or the Toronto CN Tower (again, here's a video link ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In6EUARFMVE)

In their promotional video, they have lights beaming out from the hope tower. I thought that would be cool if that's what they did with the lighting as well.
