Here is a video of how winnipeg especially downtown can cope and celebrate the winter season. Most of the doc is good but if you want to get to the point of how downtown can embrace the winter spirit click at about the 30 minute mark. It can surely make downtown alive and bring in money...

Maybe planning putting stricter height restrictions would make living more inviting with less wind tunnels in this prairie landscape and let in more sunshine. Implementing in ground floor heating and radiant heat outdoors would encourage more outdoors shopping especially in the boutique shops in the west exchange and restauranteurs would have patios, in our hardy winters.

Just how important is winter in making us Canadians Canadian? How does our frozen temperatures affect our lives, our psyches and our national values? What will happen to once-wintry Canadians with global warming? Will climate change... change us? Winter - should we love it or leave it?

Wow, excellent, just excellent. I definitely thing a lot could be done to mitigate the wind effect with properly planned and laid out buildings. The real culprit on a cold day is windchill; give me a windless sunny -25C day, a good coat, and I'm plenty happy to go outside for a while.

Winnipeg had a great 2012 with many positive and grand announcements. Lets hope 2013 brings just as many which will keep the momentum rolling!

Hey folks...long time lurker, first time poster. Here are some pictures I took of some of the ongoing projects in the West End/Central part of the city.

These first three are taken at the site of the future Women's Hospital across from HSC. This project is really backed up, but I think foundation work is suppose to be done by March.

These three are from the site of the future Diagnostic Centre directly across from the Women's Hospital. It's suppose to be a 7 storey building with a helipad on the roof.

Canad Inns at the HSC. Exterior work is almost done. Can anyone explain why they would use aluminum siding on only the corners of the building?

Homewood Suites by Hilton

Just to clarify, the new hotel on Ellice near Empress is actually a Homewood Suites by Hilton:

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/business/hotel-construction-booming-169022176.html

While the chain is marketed as extended-stay, I find it works well for families since most rooms have a separate bedroom and there is a free hot breakfast.

Good grief. This is a NEW building? Unless the year is 1975, I think not.

^^^ check Number Ten's website. They have something like that slated for construction this year.....ok, not exactly like that, but an observation tower none the less.
