I assume I'm "allowed" to mention this, because my boss told me the following in an offhand way with no disclaimer attached. I haven't heard rumors of this on SSP yet, but I do believe there's a [quote] "high end" casino to be constructed within Cityplace downtown. Anyone out there catch wind of this already? I'm a stone craftsman in the granite and marble industry, and apparently my company received a message of intent (kinda like a bid) to do the stone work in the new casino. This would be an interesting addition to downtown. While I don't gamble, and have ethical misgivings about it, such a development might be a nice addition to the core. I'm thinkin' an establishment downtown that serves food and drinks and might even be open in the evening! Might be nice to have such a business in a central location that caters to late night crowds. Any thoughts? Is this rumor confirmed? Would such a casino be a good thing for the area? Lend me your musings, fellow urban geeks!

Thunder Bay's downtown casino has really helped revitalize a formerly decrepit part of the city into the "Entertainment District", but it does draw a bit of an unsavoury crowd. I spent some time in its lobby on the Saturday before Hallowe'en and it was pretty intense what was going on at the time. Too explicit for this place.

It runs all day and night, with a few exceptions Sunday to Wednesday early mornings when they close it for a couple hours to clean up. So, like, if you want to go gambling at 9am on Wednesday or 5 in the morning on Sunday you can do that. They have to stop serving alcohol at 2am though. I am not sure when they restart selling it; 6am I think.

Winnipeg once had a high end casino, Crystal Casino. It closed up and paved way to our two casinos. So, I personally cannot see that rumor holding too much merit.

Probably to do with the Shark Club Restaurant going in on the second floor of City Place. The restaurant franchise is owned by the True North group and from what I heard they are getting a major gambling area to help support the Jets.

According to the Winnipeg Sun in a May 2011 article it will be about 90 of the lowest performing slot machines from the two Winnipeg Casino's.

For the last few weeks there has been concrete cutting and steel work going on overnight in the basement on the west side of the building (Hargrave St.) to allow for -depending on who you talk to- supports for an elevator or escalators to have a direct entrance from the street level to the restaurant for after mall hours.

people will start to notice the change in the shed soon enough, with construction on the convention center and center point already underway in a few years the shed should have a distinct feel to it that will separate it from other districts in the downtown. they just need to work on the landscaping in that area.. add more lighting, video screens, billboards and such and it would definitely catch peoples attention.

Yeah, you're right.
And more lighting is something ALL of downtown could use.

A well lit downtown at night is a step in the right direction, especially when it comes to safety. Bright signs and billboards can be sooner than later. It will take time of course, but it can be done.

Escalator.

....yeah, im not sure if that King St info is really public yet but....what was seen cannot be unseen right

Regarding HSC, the second energy centre is under construction right now on Bannatyne. The substation is slated to go right next to it on William.

Saw this in the free press today. It's pretty neat...the Free Press asked some architects what they'd build if they had no limits in Winnipeg.

All of these ideas are awesome, imo. Great to see the passion they have.

More information is anticipated out in early 2013. They are still working on it though.

Ok, I just looked at the WFP article suggesting that the Kenaston Corridor is Winnipeg's new downtown, and that downtown is 'Done like dinner.'

This is a little frustrating because they provide no insight whatsoever into what is coming down the pipe via the SHED, and what kind of spin-off (secondary) development it could generate. They're still stuck on this idea that people have to have some reason to 'go' downtown, and that there isn't enough shopping or things for people to 'go' there, and that shopping-central MUST be downtown, and there isn't enough shopping etc. etc. Good lord, the main thing that downtown needs first is RESIDENTS; the shopping will follow. The SHED developments will provide a good base of new restaurants (and residents via Centrepoint) to move things along. The convention centre expansion will also bring in more visitors and pedestrian traffic to downtown.

Its the same thing we all keep saying here about downtown.

I can buy the lush garden at Portage and Main even all of the hot air balloons floating by but the most unbelievable is that Winnipeg would actually build an overpass.

it is kinda stupid to drive all the way from the edge of the ctiy to go shopping downtown when theres a strip of shopping right next to u no??? downtown should be a regional shoipping district with other emeties for the area if it draws people from outside the core awsome lets build it to make our city healthy
