Construction fencing is down between the McDonald shoe building and the union tower. RRC did a good job leveling the paving stones in that area, and has the makings of a great gathering place when the summer festival season starts.

The met took years to redevelop as far as I remember hearing about it since... perhaps when I started posting here 9 years ago.

You'd be right - I remember talk about the Met being redeveloped when I was 10/11 back then!

I agree regarding the exterior.

Disappointing that there isn't better lighting under the original canopy or any bright marquee for the old building. At least restore or replicate the old "MET" sign and brighten things up.

It was also depressing to see the original entrance turn into a wall of windows.

Exactly what I was thinking. It's amazing how much that one single aspect of the renovation project deprived the Met of its character as a heritage theatre and gave it a sidewalk presence more like the Credit Union Central up the street.

I don't want to be a negative nellie about a great project that this city has been waiting a long time for, but it's unfortunate that the "new" Met won't have a bright marquee and people streaming in and out of its doors.

Couldn't agree more. The building without the marquee is like Burt Reynolds without a moustache.

Didn't realize the original entrance had been removed. Disappointing.

What a perfect opportunity to put the entrance under the canopy.

Hopefully the glass is at least clear.

Where was the original entrance? I seem to remember as a kid in the 80s going in through a door under the canopy.

i understand that it would have been nice to have the entrance at the middle, but there were logistical reasons it wouldnt work....that front lobby is very narrow and could not hold the modern amenities like a weather vestibule, a queuing and ticketting area, coat check etc. It needed to be be a pre-function space for the main hall. Moving the entrance to the side allows that space to be open, with a flow into the rest of the building. If it had to be the entrance, the grandeur of the space would have been lost.

in short, old buildings did not have the same space requirements that new ones do.....the pantages entry is the same...its why they moved it when it was restored.

the glass is transparent and it will be pretty cool to see right through to the theatre itself....

the door was at the corner....the wall was covered in ceramic tile for its length.

the door pre-60's was in the centre....and the canopy was different.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to reproduce that Allen's Theatre marque sign. All-in all i think it will be beautiful and a great re-use of one of Winnipeg's grand old theatre's.
