I watched Preston Sturges's wonderful Sullivan Travels last week and noticed a few scenes that were filmed in Los Angeles - mainly in the railroad area.

Here are a couple of them.

Does anyone recognize this area?

This one is also somewhere along the railroad tracks. (the little dude is actually Veronica Lake disguised as a hobo)

I'm very curious about the stone arch with the cross on top. ..(upper right)

The movie was released in 1941.....Help me out here folks.

Here's a wider view of Lee and Anna Pyatt's fruit and produce stall. Maybe the owners are in the picture. From a 1970 NYT article:
Operating a business at the market is often a family tradition, with children or grandchildren of the original farmers running the business. Others, like Lee Pyatt and his wife, Anna, who have been selling tropical and local fruit and vegetables in the same site for 29 years, have simply been around long time.

Monzano bananas, which taste best, Mr, Pyatt says, when their skins have turned black, are piled up neatly near Texas mustard greens, New Zealand kiwi fruit, snow peas, black radishes, fresh figs and Louisiana sugar cane, as well as the more commonplace lettuce, tomatoes and citrus fruits.

It's somewhere at the west end of the Cornfield site. These buildings are still standing next to Chinatown Station. City Hall and the courthouse are in the background.

According to vol. 1 of Notes on Old Los Angeles (2025): Capitol Milling Company: 1872, started as Capitol Flouring Mills, on Aliso St. by Deming, Palmer, & Co.; 1879, moved to Alameda St. near its junction with Main St.; put another way, in its Alameda incarnation it was on the west side of the river just southeast of Elysian Park at the N. Spring St. crossing; according to Newmark, in a “perhaps,” the possible location of a mill built by Joseph Chapman, succeeded by a small mill-works known as the Eagle Mills; used as a [geographical] point of reference.

Yes, great movie! Was wondering if you knew this: [I probably should point out that the following contains somewhat of a spoiler, but I don't think it matters if one knows this.]

In Preston Sturges' 1941 classic comedy Sullivan's Travels, the protagonist—a Hollywood comedy director named John L. Sullivan—desperately wants to make a serious, socially conscious film about the struggles of the working class and decides to title it O Brother, Where Art Thou? Because the director never actually gets around to making the movie in the original film, the Coen Brothers borrowed the title and premise for their own distinct 2000 movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou?

1611-1615 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica. I believe "Sane & Insane" was a record store. There's another vintage photo at dc.library.northwestern.edu.

That Rick's Drive-In was in Santa Maria, not Monica. It was located at 1520 N. Broadway in the city.

That stone arch is atop the original St. Peter's Italian Catholic Church at 1039 N. Broadway.

The church was destroyed by fire in the mid-1940s and replaced with the present structure,
