It's an awful slogan. Worse than 'be in this place'. We don't need a slogan anyway. There's so many simpler bits of branding we could use. Loyalist City. Fundy City. Canada's Oldest City.

Instead of paying a PR firm to come up with a slogan/ campaign that literally belittles our city, the city could have held a competition for a new slogan.

There’s so many better slogans we could use than that.

Canada’s First City and Canada’s Oldest City are both way better “slogans” than Small City, Big Heart, even if they don’t lend quite as well for use the in pervasive branding campaigns like the “Small City, Big ___” slogan does lol.

Oftentimes the simplest, obvious option is the best option.

Plus, if the “Canada’s First City” slogan was adopted, it might solicit a response from other Canadian cities that would like to claim they are the oldest or first Canadian city, (like Quebec, St. John’s, Montreal, or Halifax), and that could help gain Saint John some free media coverage.

The Small City, Big Heart slogan was never going to get national media attention, but “Canada’s Oldest City” or “Canada’s First City” slogans might actually get some national media attention… especially if another city tries to dispute our usage of the “oldest” or “first” title

Here’s hoping the slogan becomes a minor issue in the election and brought up at the debates.

Simply asking candidates something like “Do you think “Small City, Big Heart” is an appropriate or effective slogan for a city that claims to prioritize growth? Why or why not?” I’d love to hear some answers on that questions from the candidates running for mayor and council.

Slogan ranked number 3 in Canada. I’d say that is pretty good

Toronto — “Diversity Our Strength”
Regina — “The City That Rhymes With Fun”
Saint John — “Small City, Big ___” platform

Source? lol

And there’s no way that’s actually Regina’s official slogan

I believe Mick Jagger is the one that came up with that, or at least popularized it, back when the Stones played at Regina’s Taylor Field a while back, I think in the mid 2000’s.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but the controversial development at 1750 Sandy Point Road, across the street from Rockwood Park, for two 60-unit apartment buildings, has a building permit in process for foundation work valued at $2M. It looks like this project is a go.

The permit was registered on the permit database back on December 23rd 2025. The database has stopped being updated for some reason. Last information update was on March 2nd 2026.

Isn't this what the pounding work has been at that site for months now?

I drive past it ten times a week and yeah they're in full swing.

Isn't this site the controversial one, as it's literally parkland with lake frontage? The lot with ongoing development just had the usual complaints IIRC.

Interestingly, the former Forest School (now Heart and Stroke Foundation office) property has been subdivided. I sincerely hope the city acquires this land for Rockwood Park, as there's great opportunity to re-extend the trail network into it. Especially if they're dead set on selling part of that lot north of Harrigan Lake.

My bad, I don't drive that way often, so I haven't been paying attention. I will have to check it out.

Yes, this wasn't the controversial one, which was on the Rockwood Park side of the street, but it still got some backlash.

The typical neighbour stuff about traffic and water runoff, but also because it's quite isolated, no sidewalks or infrastructure for what is a fairly dense proposal. With the roundabout in place, the traffic situation should be better. Such a great location if you're a regular user of the park.

It kind of bugs me we do LPP or money-in-lieu as the only options. Why not mandate things like 'instead of LPP, build sidewalk from property entrance to the roundabout at Sandy Point/Foster Thurston'? More tangible commitments and less fungible money shoveled into the city's coffers.

The city should extend the sidewalk from 1840 Sandy Point to Kennebecasis Drive, while we're at it. It just stops right in the middle of the block.

I can understand the controversy of Harrigan Lake issue over the apartment development across the street.

And yeah, it'd be great if Carnage and Deer Trax could be fully reinstated via the Heart & Stroke subdivision change, but I feel like the owner is not moving in that direction...?

…Meanwhile in Moncton.

I feel like 99 King was held back by trying to fit the Uptown aesthetic, instead of just being a modern high rise, like the ones we’ve seen go up 90 mins up the highway.

I doubt this alternate design would have looked up anywhere near as great as this render does, but something striking and different would have been preferable to this drab concrete kaleidoscope of unfortunate styles.

We haven’t even seen the roof grow “legs” yet, which will be the biggest test in terms of “Is this ugly?” 😅

…it’s still not too late for the developer to delete those elements from the design

Look out Clockzilla, 99 King is coming for you!

I drove past the site this week, and there's already a crane up; things must be moving fast.

Finally able to take a photo from a common sight line now that 99 King reached full height. The way our skyline is tiered on the left and right, sadly 11 stories from this angle gives it a lopped off look. Maybe penthouse will help a bit.

I noticed it yesterday.

1) It barely stands out from the view above and will likely get blocked or further diminished by the taller towers at Fundy Quay - when completed.

2) It is completely hidden from Fort Howe due to Brunswick Square Tower.

So, as ugly as it is - it won't be too much a skyline eyesore.

We haven't even seen the roof corner accents get built. Maybe they will add lights in the corners of the roof. lol.

I really hope those god awful vape shop looking logos don't actually make it onto the finished building.

Who knows, maybe the corners of the roof won't be the ugliest aspect of this building.

I hate to criticize the lone high rise project going up in Uptown Saint John, but why couldn't they have gone with a simpler, cleaner looking design?
