Details about a $96.5 million new school planned for eastern Moncton were announced Monday.

The New Brunswick government said the K-8 school will be built in the Fairview Knoll area, between McLaughlin Drive and Elmwood Drive.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the school expected to open in fall 2030. The school will be built on a vacant part of the Forest Glen School property.

Anglophone East superintendent Randy MacLean said it’s just one of several projects in his district that are needed, since enrolment has grown by 5,000 students in the past four years.

“We've over the last five years grown exponentially, and we have several, it's the fourth project we have,” MacLean said, noting the Shediac, Salisbury and Dieppe school projects that were announced earlier.

The new school is expected to accommodate 990 students, which Johnson said will be enough to fit the current enrolment of both schools.

But it’s uncertain whether the new school will be able to accommodate future growth between now and when the school opens.

Johnson said the exact number of students the new school can fit will be calculated in the design phase.

“We're welcoming at least 1,000 students because that's the existing student population now. But we're hoping that Moncton continues to grow,” she said. “And then we're going to factor that in in the design phase and then land on a number.”
It confounds me that the provincial government will only authorize new schools to accommodate current enrolment, and refuse to factor in new growth projections. This only ensures that the new school will again feature mobile classrooms littering the property within only a couple of years. This makes no sense.
