The bungalow is probably somewhere in your 1930s aerial.

Found the original Julius Shulman photo of the First Federal bank building at Hollywood and Highland. The color is so much better than the postcard image in this 2011 post below.
This is the site of the Hollywood Hotel and the current site of a Foot Locker store.

There were probably many who thought that modernization with bldgs. like this were the answer to Hollywood's problems. Same time that Bunker Hill was being bulldozed.
The photos though, as usual, are excellent. Thanks.
I believe that C.E. Toberman was the founder of First Federal savings.
This "headquarters" bldg. is a perfect example (again. my opinion) of the typical developer's attitude at its height in the 50's through the 70's: "If it's old, it's unwanted junk and get rid of it, if it's new, modern and "up to date" it's great."
Wonder if anyone has a photo of an interesting bldg. I remember near Grauman's Chinese. It was a "1920's Oriental" style apartment bldg. called the "Nirvana," and may still be there. It was on Orchid Avenue, I believe, north of Hollywood Blvd. near Franklin, and had supposedly been financed by silent screen actress Anna Mae Wong. Also nearby was (is?) the wonderful Mission Revival house that became the Cinemotographer's bldg.

More previous mentions:

Martin Pal gave us a postcard view of the side of the First Federal building here, and I posted a black and white Julius Shulman photo from a similar angle here along with a 2016 GSV comparison. However, it is hard to beat a color Julius Shulman photograph.

ETA. It appeared in a season 5 episode of 'CHiPs' called 'Silent Partner' as the Pacific Federal building. From my notes, it was demolished around 1997.

1905 View from Hill of Los Angeles/Long Beach? CA country

eBay

The seller adds:

"You are bidding on a vintage image from my collection.

An original vintage photo

From a Long Beach and area album
This is razor sharp view of a new town with fresh sidewalks and at the end of the street a very large train station or govt building.
Behind the town we see lots of hay bundles dotting the landscape

Re: the Time's list of L.A. movies....

You can argue Harold Lloyd's classic "Safety Last!" should be on the list....this image is among the most iconic in all of cinema, and it's commonly associated with the city

I would also make a case for Roger Vadim's dark comedy "Pretty Maids All in a Row", starring Rock Hudson and Angie Dickinson, released in 1971....the film features numerous Westside locations.....the link is to the opening credits, with co-star John David Carson motoring to school principally via San Vicente Blvd. in Santa Monica/Brentwood, and arriving at University High School (doubling for "Oceanfront High" in the film)....the Osmond Brothers contribute a breezy rendition of a tune called "Chilly Winds" to the title sequence.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0j36_m1l84

John David Carson

University High

I don't think this picture could be made today, as the story revolves around Rock Hudson playing the school's rakish (and married) guidance counselor, on the side he's bedding several of the more comely coeds....when some of the girls threaten to rat him out he resorts to murder....yeah, I know, it does not read as an amusing premise on the page, but I've always found the film hilarious, and a vivid document of a specific time and place....Quentin Tarantino has occasionally included the movie on his all-time "best films" list, some say he does this tongue-in-cheek, but I don't know about that....I get the impression he genuinely reveres the picture.

Late one night about 20 years ago I noticed John David Carson seated at the bar in Dan Tana's, he was alone and not speaking to anyone, so I took the liberty of introducing myself....at some point I said "You were in one of my favorite movies"....he said, "Oh, 'The Day of the Dolphin'" (a 1973 film that starred George C. Scott)....I replied "No, 'Pretty Maids All in a Row'"....we chatted about the picture, he said he found Hudson warm and engaging.....this was Carson's first feature, and apparently Rock sensed some nerves....their first scene together was a fairly long tracking shot of the two talking as they walked the campus, when they reached their mark at the end of the walk and the film cut, Hudson turned to John David and said "Did you fart?"....the ice was broken, Carson said he was comfortable the rest of the shoot.

He said he got to know George C. Scott after the two appeared in "Day of the Dolphin"....Scott had a house in the hills that he rarely occupied, he allowed John David use of the place for extended periods, so they were fairly close....I recall Carson saying Scott was an out-and-out racist, he had no use for minorities of any stripe.....John David Carson died in Las Vegas in 2009, at age 57.

e_r, the Cronin Bros. Circus was doing its thing in March and April, 1945, at Washington and Hill.

LA Times, 3/24/1945

The Poodles Hanneford mentioned was also a performer in a nice number of silents and soundies, and has an entry at IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0360372/ I've seen a couple of his silents, and he's quite talented and amusing.

I decided to look up Wikipedia's Films set in Los Angeles page. Here's what they have listed for Y and Z.

Y
The Year of Spectacular Men
Yellow (1997)
Yellow (2012)
Yellow Fin
Yes Man
Yesterday
Yonggary
You Light Up My Life
You Talkin' to Me?
You, Me and Dupree
Young Man with Ideas
Your Place or Mine

Z
Zeroville
Zodiac Rapist
Zombieland
Zoot Suit

Actually, You Light Up My Life is a good choice for "Y." It's about a struggling young woman trying to make it in Hollywood. I recall some scenes shot in Century City and the Sunset Strip. On IMDB they list Pinks Hot Dogs, too.

The Wikipedia selection from A to Z has 1,820 films listed. I don't know how much of the films listed are primarily or tangentially in L.A. though. I say that because the film Yesterday listed under Y has a section of the movie filmed in Malibu at a beach house, but I don't think most of the film takes place in Los Angeles. (Sidebar: I first saw the film Yesterday on a DVD rental which had some extras on it including a few deleted scenes. Two of those scenes were filmed in West Hollywood, one at Santa Monica Blvd. and La Cienega.)

That's what I thought, too, Riichkay, when I wondered if any silent movie would make the list. Only "1" did.

There's actually a film that came out recently that is nicely filmed all over the city of Los Angeles. (At least 14 locations are mentioned on IMDB.) It's about an Angel (it's a city of them) who makes a mistake meddling in the lives of two people and it has to be straightened out. I thought it was quite good, both heartfelt and quite funny. Cast: Seth Rogen, Keanu Reeves, Aziz Ansari, Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh. The title could've been better; feels a little too generic. It's titled Good Fortune.

Here's a link to the teaser trailer to give you an idea of location footage:

Do any of you know where this was?

I found this photo online with no caption. I’m sure I remember this place, while being driven by my parents or, possibly, while riding my bike.

Would be around late ’70s/early ’80s. In the San Fernando Valley, possibly North Hollywood/Sun Valley-ish..?

I believe that’s the address next to the door, but when you zoom in it’s just a bunch of pixels.

Can’t remember where I downloaded it…

PS: I tried searching this thread for “Hollywood a Go Go” and “Girls Galore”, but didn’t really find anything...

Watts photos

Laist.com has an interesting article on the recovery of rare photos relating to the Watts riots in the city archives, accidently discovered by an intern.

The article provides one photo:

laist.com

The 1965 CD has:

Tick Tock Groceries at 1650 E. 103rd St
Eddie's Dress Shop at 1646 E. 103rd St

The storefronts are mostly long gone.

A reverse image search found me a higher resolution photo where I could read the number on the Hollywood A Go Go bar as 10542. Adding that to my search gave me 10542 Victory Boulevard, North Hollywood. The current building doesn't match the image above. The photo is credited to film director Wim Wenders.

A little noir from the Hollywood A Go Go in a 1992 LAT article:
A North Hollywood nightclub worker shot himself to death during a game of Russian roulette in the back office of the club, Los Angeles police said Saturday.

Mark Raymond Keller, 34, was working in a rear office at the Hollywood-A-Go-Go, 10542 Victory Blvd., about 11:15 p.m. Friday when he tried to impress a friend by putting one bullet in the chamber of his .357 revolver, spinning the cylinder and placing the gun to his head, Sgt. Ike Langsam said.

Keller pulled the trigger once and the gun did not fire, police said. But the gun went off when Keller pulled the trigger a second time, Langsam said. Keller was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.

That address reads 10007 to me, or possibly 10067.
EDIT: completely missed the post where this was already found. Sorry.

My first thought when I saw the pointed objects on the roof was the 12-story Mode O'Day building at Washington and Main. The address in the article posted by odinthor confirmed my guess, but it took a while to find the right view. This one is dated 1930 to 1939.

Thank you, HossC! My family would have driven past that building every time we went to visit my grandparents’ graves at Pierce Brothers, which is why I remember it. I’ll caption my photo so I’ll remember the address!
