PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Car theft in Portland has fallen to pre-pandemic levels following a surge in crime that caused Oregon to see the third-highest rate of stolen vehicles in the U.S. in 2022.

The number of cars stolen in Portland decreased by 25% between November of 2022 and November of 2023, Portland Police Bureau crime statistics show. Vehicle theft remained high in January and February of 2023, when the city was seeing an average of 30 cars stolen each day. However, the number of stolen cars steadily declined into the summer and remained well-below 2022 levels through the end of November.

Talk about getting back to pre-pandemic levels.

Portland car thefts decline by more than 50% over 2-year period, PPB data shows

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland car thefts in 2024 saw a marked decline from the year before, new police data shows.

In 2024, the number of reported car thefts in Portland was 5,474 — nearly 3,000 less than the year before — according to the Portland Police Bureau’s Monthly Neighborhood Offense Statistics.

The latest batch of data, released late last month, rounds out 2024 with December’s statistics. It shows a clear pattern that Portland’s reported car thefts are nowhere near as high as they were during the peak of 11,115 in 2022.

Reported car thefts in Portland, per year

2024 — 5,474
2023 — 8,299
2022 — 11,115
2021 — 9,251
2020 — 6,561
2019 — 6,555
2018 — 7,010
2017 — 7,413
2016 — 5,244
Data courtesy PPB

Not only did 2024 mark continued declines in reported car thefts, but the 5,474 figure represents the lowest it’s been since 2016.

I wonder how much has to do with Kia fixing its easy-theft issues ("Kia challenge").

I don't know how much that affected rates but nationally, the car theft rate rose from 2019-2023 from 199 per 100,000 residents to 283 per 100,000 so it seems local efforts are bucking that trend.

Maybe some small part of it is increasing EV adoption in Portland:

I'd be curious to see the stats vs 2010.

Or all of the car thieves got the cars they wanted and just don't need to steal anymore (I'm kidding)

This only shows through 2022. In 2024 that number was more than cut in half and thefts dropped to 5,474. But still much higher than 2010 which looks like a low point, where it looked to be a lil over 3,000.
