PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland car thefts in 2024 saw a marked decline from the year before, new police data shows.

In 2024, the number of reported car thefts in Portland was 5,474 — nearly 3,000 less than the year before — according to the Portland Police Bureau’s Monthly Neighborhood Offense Statistics.

The latest batch of data, released late last month, rounds out 2024 with December’s statistics. It shows a clear pattern that Portland’s reported car thefts are nowhere near as high as they were during the peak of 11,115 in 2022.

Reported car thefts in Portland, per year

2024 — 5,474
2023 — 8,299
2022 — 11,115
2021 — 9,251
2020 — 6,561
2019 — 6,555
2018 — 7,010
2017 — 7,413
2016 — 5,244

Not only did 2024 mark continued declines in reported car thefts, but the 5,474 figure represents the lowest it’s been since 2016.
