Don't build the roads, half the region says you're anti-car, half the region says you're pro-car. Build the roads, same thing. Can't win.

My main beef with a number of roads in Surrey is that they'd switch back and forth between 2 and 4 lanes. Plus they may or may not have had a sidewalk and for the most part the only bike lanes were marked shoulder lanes (which surprisingly cars tend to stay out of).

With the work they've been doing over the last while they've been making roads a consistent number of lanes, with sidewalks and at times also separated bike lanes. That makes travel better for everyone.

I thought the original post about this road widening effort showing that the region is 'anti-car' was being sarcastic, or a parody of the usual 'one more lane bro' crowd.

I mean, per the article, Surrey is spending more money to 4-lane a section of 132 than the city plans to spend over the next 10 years on either cycling or walking capital expenditures (per their 10 year servicing plan), the article confirms that provision for walking and cycling when they widen 132 is an afterthought (it will include "integrated cycling-walking facilities where possible") and the article mentions a number of other, more expensive road widening projects that are also underway, as well as the new road recently built through a park to help cars get on their way faster.

Who could read all this and conclude that it shows the region is anti-car, it doesn't make any sense?

If true, my bad - I seem to be getting hit by Poe's Law from both sides of this argument these days.

Looks like the whole street could use a touchup, starting with those almost nonexistent sidewalks.

Update on Highway 1 upgrade to Abbotsford.
It’s now in phases with the first phase, phase 3A, going to Mt.Lehman Road.
Phase 3B is until Highway 11 now and Whatcom Road is part of Phase 4 which goes up to Chilliwack.
Pre construction starts this year with actual construction on phase 3A starting 2024.
Also it looks like it’ll be 5! lanes in some sections, someone correct me if I’m seeing it wrong.
Ohh and a diverging interchange too!!

Thanks! It looks like lane configuration will be HOV + 2 GP + 1 truck climbing when required + bus on shoulder.

I'll make a new thread for this project.

BC's first diverging diamond interchange proposed for Hwy 1 and Hwy 11 interchange?

That didn't last long!

Vancouver to end Kitsilano Yew Street pedestrian-zone pilot
By Hana Mae Nassar
Posted Aug 4, 2023, 9:43AM PDT.Last Updated Aug 5, 2023, 4:11PM PDT.

After five weeks, the City of Vancouver says it is ending its pilot project that turned a portion of Yew Street in Kitsilano into a pedestrian-friendly zone.

The pilot saw the stretch between Cornwall and 1st avenues be blocked to vehicle traffic during the day, with the road only accessible to cars for deliveries and loading during certain times....

....According to the report, staff have gotten “a lot of feedback” throughout the pilot project period, with some raising concerns about traffic access, circulation, and parking — those worries mainly coming from “one of the businesses on the streets.”...

Probably so the bus could exit easily.
Chalk it up to a cost savings versus constructing a centre lane HOV exit like at 202 Ave, etc.

The bus could exit just as easily if it was a general purpose lane, this will make exiting for everyone else more difficult since they’ll be crossing the bus lane. We only have to look at highway 99 to see how shoulder bus lanes have bastardized exit / entrance ramps

In terms of interference, it's not as if there will be dozens of buses using the lane. A bus-only lane also avoids transit delays when the entire freeway - including the HOV - is slow or stopped.

There will have to be some kind of cross-over for the 202nd Street centre HOV entrance/exit for buses to/from the east side. Didn't see any details regarding that part (though I might have missed it).

Staff heard a lot of feedback through the pilot. There were concerns related to traffic access, circulation and parking, particularly from one of the businesses on the streets.

Beyond those concerns, the feedback demonstrated that there is significant community and business interest in making the street be more plaza-like for gathering and activating the area, rather than primarily reallocating space for walking.

Regardless, there's a survey here to help determine what people want to see there next year, if anything at all.

Pretty much every comment I heard was along the lines of: "there's a beach with a park a block away, why would you want to sit in the middle of a street?" Note that most of the restaurants already had patios.

Good point.
If there's backed up traffic in the section between, it would be hard for the buses to move between the eastern shoulder lanes and the centre HOV lanes for the ramps at 202 Ave.
