19 times something like this has happened. They were going to look into if this is common anywhere else cause they haven't really heard of so many such incidents anywhere else.

Something must have happened to the load. The tunnel, that the truck definitely passed through, is signed at 4.15m while the hit 17A overpass is signed at 4.64m. Or the posted clearances are way off.

It’s just oversized load. Driver don’t care. He must’ve been in rush to get to the port before they shut down second time…

No source has said it's an oversized load as far as I can see, it is a large dump trailer. From this view the truck has plenty of clearance to the overpass where it stopped. The bed must have raised up, one way or another.

Anything higher than 4.1 meters is oversized.

To BC standard they are certified. Nobody can just hop into a transport truck and drive off with a 50' trailer.
Since I've not heard of the minimum requirements on these tests changing in the last few years all I can assume is that during COVID the increased dependency on long-haul truckers changed something, but I have no evidence to support that. You'd expect when just one trucking company gets involved in an overpass collision not once but twice in 12 months there's a bit more than a temporary suspension of your operating license, but that's happened.
Is ICBC eating the insurance costs on the truck/trailer/cargo/bridge and no substantial fines are being levied against the company responsible for the driver? You'd expect when your certificate to operate in a province is threatened to be revoked or you are on the hook for a quarter of a million dollars in infrastructure damage you'd be more keen to tell your drivers to either respect the road or find another job.

I saw different angles and it look to have plants of extra room, I wonder if it wasn’t fully closed?

It’s always this same vintage of overpass that gets hit. Such a terrible design, not only for its low height but also zero room for expanding the lanes of the highway travelling beneath it. We’ll call it the BC Special!

An industry that has been racing to the bottom and has begun to heavily rely on temporary foreign workers who get trained in other provinces with less stringent testing.

Is it the failure of the drivers? Of course! But the trucking companies are crooked and corrupt and simply do not give a shit because nothing will happen aside for a small fine. All levels of governments don't want to open up a can of worms due to identity politics since these problem trucking companies are largely south asian owned.

It's not the fault of the Ministry of Highways if container trailers get taller or drivers fail to verify their load height.
I dunno about you but lasting around 50 years before being beat up by forces beyond your control doesn't seem to be a fault of the design.

Nah, that overpass would have been long demolished and replaced with a modern overpass and entirely new interchange with the cancelled George Massey bridge project!

I believe the new tunnel project retains this structure……..

Once again this region proves how anti car they are.2 to 3 years construction on an 8 block stretch when this road should've been 4 lanes minimum from KGB to highway 10 years ago.

There have been a lot of roads in Surrey that were either 2 lanes or would alternate between 2 and 4 lanes. It's only been in the recent past that they've been working on it.

Such minor project barely worth mentioning, like most infrastructure projects in Metro. I am glad it's happening but this should be happening all over the place and go beyond 4 lanes on our arterials. We are playing a constant catchup and losing.
