Looks like construction has started on this. Drove by yesterday and appears as though the foundation is going in.

Water Street Redevelopment

Ongoing debate of Heritage Status and demoliotion of historic buildings in downtown St. John's reminds me a development I saw in Halifax where the exisiting facade was maintained outside of a new/modern office building.

It looks like same has to be retained within any redevelopment here. I hope this remains as such.

I've seen that building in Halifax and like the mix of old & new. I agree, hopefully that's the plan here.

Many cities do that...sometimes spectacularly. Probably not here though. I always question why nothing works here, why nothing big happens here, why nothing can get off the ground here??? Just in the Atlantic region alone....Halifax, Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John, Charlottetown, etc., all you see is construction cranes dotting the skyline. Why is that? These threads for other cities update constantly, yet ours can go weeks or months without an entry.....simple because there's nothing to report I guess. It's pretty dismal.

I think it's because of the incompetent councilors and management at city hall. No one want to do business with them because of all their red tape.
look at Galway, insane amount of traffic goes there because of Costco, yet nothing really being built there to take advantage of it. Seems stalled now because of a stupid roundabout demand and Ron's hatred of Danny.
I'm sure if Ron's real estate business was to get a %, there'd be zero delay...

Galway development is stalled because Danny Williams is an idiot.

It's only stopped because the city wouldn't give Danny anymore permits until Southlands Blvd is completed. Which the part that isn't completed, is not on Dannys property.

157-163 Water Street

https://vocm.com/2026/06/07/300917/

Demolition approved by city council. "The staff report has determined that any new structure erected on the site maintain a number of heritage features that would maintain the historic character of the street and surrounding neighbourhood." Time will tell what that looks like.
