Why is there no number of folks who do not identify with any religion?

I guess each metro could have an "Other or None" category for everything below the top 10. Not a direct answer, but can be used for comparison between cities.

For example compare "religious" cities with one known as less so:
Portland - 1,755,586 or 69% "other or none"
Oklahoma City - 747,327 or 49% "other or none"
Salt Lake City - 484,026 or 37% "other or none"

Not all are "none" but certainly a significant chunk

Either way, these numbers certainly do not represent only practicing members of the respective faiths. For example, the number of Catholics listed for my city (Buffalo) is huge, but actual mass attendance numbers are only 22% of the listed total.

Nashville is the only city with Coptic Christianity in the top 10 which is interesting, but there is a strangely large number of Egyptian immigrants there so I suppose it checks out.

The east/west Mormon split is very noticeable in this data.

Spending my whole life in chicagoland, I can count the number of Mormons I've known on one hand.

The Catholic Church leading in the big southern cities is very surprising.

One big Catholic Church vs many Protestant denominations.

The Pew survey says Atlanta is 27% evangelical and 9% Catholic for example.

Among evangelicals, 8% identify with the Southern Baptist Convention.

I'm going to assume it's due to the rise of Latino migration and Northern Whites.

A more telling question to ask everyone who checked the Catholic box (especially in the Northeast): how many of you have attended a regular Mass just once in the last two decades? I sure as shit haven't, not since 2002 / Spotlight. And I'm not counting showing up to a nephew's Baptism or Christmas Eve/Christmas/Easter. I mean just a regular Sunday Mass.

There are a lot of lowercase-c / cultural Catholics like myself who will always check the box but who gave up on the actual institution a long time ago. Maybe less so in the more religious South, but among the traditional Catholic ethnicities in the Northeast (and I suspect the Midwest), we're mostly in it for the holidays and the Catholic high school / uni teams.

I'm pretty sure most people who self-identify as Evangelical are in it for real.

The Pew survey found more religious nones (37%) than self-identified Catholics (29%) in Massachusetts.

Not surprised about Roman Catholicism in Greater LA; the Los Angeles Archdiocese is the largest Catholic archdiocese in the United States.

I'm surprised that Buddhism isn't in the top 10 for LA; I thought I read somewhere that there are around 380,000 Buddhists in Greater Los Angeles. All forms of Buddhism are represented here I'm sure: Mahayana, Theravada, and Vajrayana Buddhism. I've been to at least one of each of those traditions' temples.

Numbers for Muslims don't seem right either for LA. According to Wiki, the Iranian population in Los Angeles is estimated to be around 700,000, making it the largest concentration of Iranians in the world outside of Iran. So with Iranians alone, assuming 99% are Muslim (which is what Wiki says of the country of Iran), there are probably 500,000 Muslims in LA.

Persian Jews make up a big chunk of the Iranian diaspora in LA.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if a majority of Persians in the U.S. are Jewish. In NYC and DC areas, it seems like all the Persians are Jewish.

The most Persian geography in the U.S. outside of CA is Great Neck, NY. That community is essentially all Jewish.

Not to mention all of the Christian groups in Iran who also got the fuck outta dodge when the country decided to go full batshit theocracy back in '79.

I agree that the Muslim count for greater Los Angeles seems off. The figure given here is lower than the lowest estimates I have seen before.

Per the LA Times, there are at least 50,000 Iranian Jews in Los Angeles.

my mom was a native, born at emory hospital, and came from a heavily catholic family. before they'd relocated to orlando in the '50s, they lived in oakhurst, decatur; she told me stories about riding the streetcar downtown to catholic school. i'm not sure of the history beyond that, there's a bit of italian somewhere but i don't think any of the great grandparents or beyond were from anywhere up north.

All of the Protestant church numbers should be combined in order to give a better representation of the cities' religious makeup.

All the Protestant denominations are recent white European versions of the bullshit anyway... for people who don't want to fully follow the rules and practices, but still want to feel that they'll get into heaven anyway.
