hkskyline's 2025 COPENHAGEN adventure

Back in 2007, I posted a series from Copenhagen. It was my first visit and I had a great time, even though it costed an arm and a leg.

Fast forward to 2025, and it's time to return. It's still an expensive place to visit, but there is still so much to see for a relatively small city.

Let's start with the architecture in Orestad, an ambitious urban development south of the historic centre easily accessible by driver-less metro. There are more new buildings now and the designs range wildly - a feast to the senses. I was amazed back in 2007 and continue to be now. This is one of my favourite regeneration projects worldwide.

The streets had a fair amount of pedestrians and cyclists during the early morning as both adults and children start their day. The metro line runs along the linear district all the way to the end so getting around is not an issue.

Is that British English?

Cool pics!

Just a little bit behind the Lakes is an observation deck that is not typically featured in the tourist literature. On the 15th floor of University of Copenhagen's Maersk Tower is a free viewpoint with a panoramic view of the city from a different perspective.

The tower itself has a few architectural highlights. The building opened in 2017 and stands 75m high with 15 floors. The external facade is covered with 3300 copper shutters. It is home to the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences with research laboratories, offices, and classrooms.

Just a short ride on the metro from the city centre is a new neighbourhood with a diverse range of residential architecture and plenty of waterfront promenades at your doorstep. Despite swimming being banned along much of this coastline, there were plenty of people sunbathing when I arrived.

Nordhavn is a fairly car-free neighbourhood that rejuvenated former industrial wasteland. The vision is a residential suburb for 40,000 and work spaces as well, and a 5-minute city with a 400m radius around the metro station, which opened in 2020.

The Silo was previously a grain silo but now repurposed into a 17-storey luxury residential block with a restaurant on the top.

One of the highlights is a parking lot with a playground on the roof, a good use of an otherwise dead space. Konditaget Luders is 24m above the street designed for kids living in an area where there isn't much room for them to enjoy on the ground.

The waterfront at Sandkaj overlooking Nordhavn Bassin was extremely busy with people enjoying the summer sun. There is a section where swimming was allowed as well. If getting a tan is not your thing, grab a bite at the several restaurants overlooking the water.

Christiania is a self-proclaimed enclave that escaped the eyes of the law, running on counter-culture principles. It started in 1971 when a group of homeless occupied the abandoned army barracks, building their own homes amidst hopes of setting up their idealist community with a laid-back attitude. Decisons were made by consensus at community meetings, they ran under its own constitution, ended conventional property ownership, and legalized drugs.

The government eventually tolerated the community and let them govern themselves in a sort of "social experiment", and in 2011, forced the community to get a mortgage and buy up the land.

With a bit of skepticism over whether it is safe to visit, I made my way on a Saturday afternoon and was surprised it was bursting with tourists. I didn't smell any marijuana in the air and it looked like just another tourist attraction with shops, markets, and street art.
