In light of my daughter missing her school’s 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. and a few surrounding areas, I decided last summer to take her myself. My fiancé joined us for the D.C. portion of the trip, due to the fact that her daughter was living there doing an internship. We hit up D.C., ventured over to DelMarVa, across to Norfolk, Richmond, Charlottesville, Shenandoah, a small corner of West Virginia, and ended the trip in Baltimore. Of those places, I had only been to D.C. and Baltimore, and that was over 20 years ago.

We hit D.C. about three weeks before somebody decided it was a warzone and that the National Guard needed to be brought in to do landscape work. If only we had waited! What an unsafe, unsanitary, chaos-ridden hellhole! How can anybody stand to live in such squalor?

We braved great danger by staying in DuPont Circle, sat alone in empty but great restaurants throughout the city, bicycled through the worst neighborhoods in the U.S., and lamented the fact that there was nowhere to go to a ball in the entire city. Such a shame.
