Miami and Miami Beach, March 2026

Thanks to a work trip over the past weekend I got a chance to visit Miami and Miami Beach, including South Beach, Downtown Miami and the Design District.

Home for the weekend, the iconic Fountainbleau.

Did you go in the water at all?

I have to look up that Hotel Ankara. It looks like some great late-modernist roadside architecture.

I wish I had a better understanding of Miami but I’ve only been there once and was pushing a stroller around.

Thanks for the great detail pics of the older buildings. We rarely see those amongst the bloated white balconied cacaphony of condo towers.

I still think Pei’s deliciously curvy tower is both the most ‘Miami’ and best office building in the skyline (though Espírito Santo Plaza by KPF is pretty great too).

Did you go in the water at all?

I can swim if I need to but I usually just do the barefoot walk on the beach. Water was a bit chilly but there were a few folks out in it - pretty sure it was folks from our Canadian and Scandinavian offices.

I love the Pei tower (and yep, the Miami Vice theme was in my head) but I didn't realize the curved facade isn't super smooth but noticeably segmented if that makes sense. Still a great building but until I saw it in person, I didn't know.

The Pei tower (Centrust) was built in the 1980s during the explosion & collapse of the Savings & Loan industry. Despite the Architecture & the views it took nearly a decade for the building to be fully leased and occupied.
Even though it's not on the waterfront the night time lights situated on the rooftops of nearby buildings makes this skyscraper stand out in the skyline. It even has a Metromover station in it!

I absolutely love the “Centrust” tower. Such a great-looking building. It always reminds me of the opening credits scene to the movie Bad Boys.

Miami is developing an impressive skyline. It’s just a shame that so much of the new construction feels like the same cookie-cutter glass-and-balcony apartment towers repeated over and over.
