Back to McMurdo

Going to slowly post things here, given the slow internet connection. Here's a teaser of our C17 after we landed at Phoenix Field.

Hut Point, where Scott's first expedition built its hut and gives its name to the peninsula that McMurdo lies on. In the background are the foothills of the Royal Society range.

Since they are gorgeous and omnipresent, they will be featured heavily. They rise to just above 4 km at Mt. Lister and are about 100 km away

A few shots of Town from Hut Point, the new dorm under construction is visible in the second.

Here's a helicopter in front of Mt. Discovery

Well, turns out I didn't have time or bandwidth to upload much from Antarctica. So going to slowly post things here now that I'm back in Chicago.

Here are some from a jaunt on the sea ice on the Cape Armitage Trail:

Town looks a bit more glamorous with Mt. Erebus behind

Heli about to land

A posse of seal (?) researches returning from their daily outings

Scott Base (the Kiwi base). Will revisit later.

Several miles away, the Long Duration Balloon Facility, the reason for my visit. A van is on the Willy Field road in the middle. Some seals in the foreground.

Another shot of LDB with the pressure ridges to the left, where the sea ice meets the Ross Ice Shelf.

A skier. We'll see different kinds of skiers later.

A radome lined up with Erebus

These fans keep Antarctica cold:

WILD!!!!!!!!!!! I love seeing this so much!

I know it's probably not all fun and games, but hope you can enjoy the experience a bit, outside of the crazy cold.

Thanks for sharing these!

Oh, I think I broke the autofocus on my old camera (which was admittedly much crappier than my current camera) in 2020 taking pictures in the wind of penguins .

My R10 did great though. More pictures soon...

One of the most interesting place on earth thanks for sharing. Mt Erebus is a fascinatingly unique volcano a stratovolcano with a long lasting lava lake although a much more viscous lava than is usually in a lava lake. Sweet fumerals forming ice chimneys and caves. I think I heard that Erebus ejects semi precious crystals in it’s intermittent explosive events although I may be misremembering.

Sorry I've been so slow at this.

Here are pictures from the Ob Tube, an observation platform submerged in the sea ice (before it starts cracking up).
