Youtubers

I have been meaning to make a thread about Youtubers for a while now. Where we could share some city building/transit/urbanism videos. That sort of general flavor.

Well... and this actually got me out of bed to post. I am a bit shocked and saddened to learn that Reece Martin a.k.a RMTransit is hanging it up. Went to pop a little YT on to fall asleep to and this was the first video I clicked on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDxa9F0NSTg&ab_channel=RMTransit

I would imagine I have watched at least somewhere in the region of ??? LOTS! of his videos at this point. Funny little note to this particular video. He mentions Technology Connections. If you know you know. If you don't know, look it up. Nerds stand together.

Hopefully these aren't too obvious. I don't know how our algorithms would compare. These channels fall clearly within the scope of this form though.

City Nerd

https://www.youtube.com/@CityNerd

Great videos. Am I crazy or does he sound like Colin Robinson from 'What We Do in the Shadows'? I am liking this more recent trend of Youtubers actually travelling to places that they talk about. Patreon is a great asset to increase the production values of your channel.

City Beautiful

https://www.youtube.com/@CityBeautiful

I really like this guys broad scope. Very well rounded channel indeed. I think he is/was an actual city planner, a post secondary level teacher and would have at least a Masters degree so he is pretty concise in his knowledge.

Oh The Urbanity

https://www.youtube.com/@OhTheUrbanity

These two are fun because they have a lot of Canadian content. Pretty sure they spent a good portion of their lives living in Ottawa and Montreal so some local flavor is nice. I think I would describe them as a little bit more philosophical compared to the other channels I listed.

Ok.. its almost 4am. I just felt compelled to post after see Reece move onto the next chapter of his life. Will miss you buddy.

Nice List. Also saw RMT ending his channel. I guess his channel was at the comfortable but not lucrative enough to forgo any other employment. There are bigger channels in the space so he still could grow it but it's never going to be a 5 million follower account.

Great list! I follow, or at least watch occasional videos, from all of them.

I'd also recommend About Here, BC focused, but still very relevant.

Capitaine Montréal for, well, Francophone Montreal content.

Forgotten Ottawa for some Ottawa history, though not a super active channel.

Paige Saunders for more politicly/Canadian minded content.

Propos Montréal for Montreal history.

Shifter for cycling content (based in Calgary).

Stewart Hicks for architecture (Chicago based).

And of course, can't forget Rail Fans Canada, who started as O-Train Fans!

I'll check those out!

Stewart Hicks is fantastic.

Great examinations of styles and history. The presentation and narration is exactly the type of video style I enjoy.

Architectural Digest also has some great videos if you are willing to curate their content lists. I have no desire for the Open Houses or the Interior redesigns but it was originally a magazine after all.

Unique Spaces has some really cool featured houses, like this one for example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhgtB-Tq...n&index=1&ab_channel=ArchitecturalDigest

Walking Tours have amazing guest hosts and all around top notch production.

NotJustBikes is probably known by most here already but just in case:
https://www.youtube.com/@NotJustBikes

Climate Town is another one I like. It's mostly about environmental and climate subjects but he does have a few videos on parking and housing:

Miles in Transit is here today. I just saw him and his friends getting off of Line 2 at Leitrim station about 1 hour ago. He acknowledged me when I yelled out 'Youtuber'

I saw this video a week or two ago and forgot to post it.

I thought it was pretty interesting. I had a rough idea of this videos subject but it's laid out so well I think it quadrupled my understanding.

It's basically about land rights and how Hong Kongs transit agency essentially funds itself.

I guess when the state owns all land in the territory except the Anglican Cathedral this sort of thing is a possibility.

Whats with the pure hatred of the O-Train? Trust me, I know it has issues, but people act like its the spawn of Satan. As someone who's used the network and researched it, people are very much over exaggerating how bad it really is.

We do special property taxes for recreation centres so there is no reason we couldn't do it for Transit. The thing is we don't want to pay more for better transit because most of us don't use it. Those that do are less likely to be citizens and less likely to vote even if they are.

It is a weird system. I'm still very frustrated we didn't build something more akin to the REM with fully automated trains. That said, it's not terrible (cuts to frequency aside). It's very reliable at this point, but also excruciatingly slow with long dwell times. Hoping that's not a forever thing.

*This post was supposed to be a defence of the O-Train, but it didn't turn out that way.

Not citizens?

Everyone benefits from transit, even those who don't use it. The more people on transit, the fewer cars on the road.

I swear to god I don't have brain damage. I think I might have forgotten to link the video in a post I made about forgetting to link the video.

Top Tier moment from Ponyboy

This American guy posts a lot and he doesn't represent a ringing endorsement of the US education system. If it isn't American, he doesn't understand it. He has had episodes about his confusion about the metric system, road signs etc.

This is about if we will impose additional taxes on areas that gain new access to rapid transit. How many people do you think within 1 km of Iris station would vote to pay more in taxes if the choice was that or don't get a station? I suspect it is very low is my point.

This guy has multiple channels about different countries.

Tyler Bucket (Canada)
Tyler Rumple (UK)
Tyler Walker (Norway)

There is some other dude that does the same thing - Mert Can (Scottish guy living in Indonesia).

Reaction videos are the dumbest things on YouTube. I find the fake facial expressions and constant interjections really annoying to watch.
