Desmarais Building opens at U of O

Businessman made $15M donation

CanWest News Service

Published: Wednesday, October 31

For decades, Paul Desmarais Sr.'s efforts to help provide better facilities at the University of Ottawa have been a cornerstone of the school's growth.

Now, an $80-million building, named in honour of the Canadian business leader, has become a focal point of the university and a cornerstone of its further expansion plans.

The University of Ottawa officially opened the Desmarais Building yesterday.

The 41,800-square-metre building was made possible by a $15-million donation from Desmarais, 80.

The Desmarais Building will be the new home for the school's Telfer School of Management, and will provide extra space for several student groups and campus organizations.

It will be used by more than 6,000 students daily.

I like that building; it looks really nice and has significantly changed the skyline in that area.

The LED display in the lobby is very nice. You can see it from the outside.

It certainly has more character than the other box buildings in the downtown...

I like this building a lot from Nicholas St. I haven't seen the other side, though.

I remember reading somewhere a while back that the criticism was that it was just another concrete box, and whoever said that couldn't be more wrong, imho.

There's just lots to like about it.

For one, there's character in the building merely by it's shape, and that it's not a box. Secondly, the amount of glass is pretty perfect, compared to the concrete. Forms a very good balance, imho.

I just love the way Ottawa U is developping.
I wish this kind of design could find its way to Lebreton.

I've always liked that building. When the Starbucks opened, that was icing on the cake. :-)
