Phase 2 is scheduled to begin sometime next year. I guess the crane needs to be moved to reach the 2nd tower.

Could be worse. The upper corner suites will have nice views of parliament and the chateau...

Claridge Plaza reminds me of the utter crap you can find all across the Southern United States sans the palm trees.

The balconies are hideous. And how about those adorable bathroom-green accents? Charming. Wow! I can't believe I once found the original renderings somewhat attractive!

Maybe a second identical tower will make it look better?

Looking at the back of the building from Tabaret Hall when I've passed there at around 5:00 tonight, it doesn't look that bad I my opinion. At least it does not had problems like 90 George or the Galleria which there were extensive delays for various reasons.

I found this online article from 2005, regarding Claridge Plaza.

This is what I found most interesting:

Ducharme also sees Claridge Homes' other Rideau Street project - a twin-tower condominium about 500 metres from 700 Sussex and bordered by Cumberland and the University of Ottawa - as another reclamation hope.

Claridge Plaza and its 382 residential units will be anchored by a three-storey podium that Malhotra says will house at least one big-box retail outlet. Construction is to start early next year.

"It's probably the biggest catalyst for Rideau because it will help gentrify an area that's pretty raw right now. The retail should be strong enough to bring people from all over the city," he says.

"Unfortunately the city is cutting back right now on its moratorium on (building) fees. (Claridge Plaza) is costing about $1 million in building permits. That will hurt (other) development plans," Malhotra says.

Any idea what this big-box retail outlet will be? Let's hope it's not another office supplies store.

So does Hull Sector, but that doesn't make it any less ugly...

I remember hearing a few years ago that Home Depot was considering opening up an outlet downtown. Let's hope that HD has changed its mind...

I'm pretty sure the design was changed from a 3 storey podium to a single storey shortly before the start of construction. Maybe this deal falling through was the reason for the change?

Yeah the designed changed to ground level retail only. The only businesses will be a drug store and a Starbuck's under the Tower 1. I don't know what retail is planned under Tower 2 yet.

Well, that sucks! Aren't we near the saturation point with coffee shops and Shoppers Drugmart's in this town?

Apparently not...

A friend of mine wrote about Ottawa(fairly scathing but in a humourous way) and two things that came as a major shock to him was the sheer numbers of Subway restaurants but utter lack of a Subway in the proper sense of the term. The other was that he counted 11 coffee shops on one of his walks downtown.

I had heard about Home Depot at one point too. I'm wasn't so sure how Home Depot would work downtown, but it's too bad they couldn't have made a deal with a Future Shop or Best Buy- that would have been a good addition to the Rideau retail mix.
