LUBLIN
Lublin is situated close to the Polish eastern border (in the past - border with the Soviet Union, now the country borders with the Ukraine and Belarus).
Lublin is the city of historical heritage of different cultures – Western (Latin), Eastern - Russian and Jewish, what was pointed out by Romano Prodi during his visit in Lublin - seems to have perfect localization for events of European dimension where the West meets East.
The Lublin region

Geographical location
East-central part of Poland, borderland of Central European Lowland from one side and old mountains of Central Europe from the other; between the biggest Polish river - Vistula and the Bug River.
Configuration
Varied; rich in water lowlands in the northern part of the province gradually become uplands in the south.

A mixture of oceanic and continental weather with usually long, sunny and hot summer, often frosty winters, moderate rainfall.

Natural resources
Of supraregional importance: rich hard coal deposits amounting to 8.5 bln tons.
Kazimierz Dolny, the XVII-th century houses decorated with figures of Saints Nicholas and Christopher. The facades were decorated with reliefs depicting people and animals with lots of floral ornaments. It is where Christian motifs mix with Renaissance grotesque, medieval fantasies and Greek mythology.
Of regional and local importance: rock oil and natural gas, silicate ground, glass-making and moulding sand, phosphate rock, deposits of limestone for cement industry, road and construction stone, writing chalk, lake chalk, aggregate.

Higher education and science
There are 12 institutions of tertiary education based in the region (4,900 academic teachers and researchers, 72,000 students and more than 10,000 graduates per year.
Lublin has 5 public universities - Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (approx. 32,000 students), Catholic University of Lublin (18,000 students), Lublin University of Technology (11,000 students), Agricultural University of Lublin (8,500 students) and Medical University in Lublin (3,700 students).
The history of University is closely related to the history of the city of Lublin. University adds a special flavour to social, cultural and sport city life and their architecture, infrastructure, etc.
Above: The only underground chalk mine in Europe - a maze of passages descending even 20 m under the city of Chelm which date back to the 16th century are open to the public (guided tours only).
The predecessor of Lublin University of Technology was Evening School of Engineering.
The first faculty, which began its activity in 1953, was Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
In 1965 The Evening School of Engineering was reorganised into The High School of Engineering.
Courses of study leading to master’s degree were established in 1973.
In 1977 Lublin University of Technology acquired its present status.
During the following years the Lublin University of Technology developed and expanded the range of scientific and didactic interests. It is a thriving academic community with a highly qualified and experienced staff and excellent teaching resources. The staff and the students of the Lublin University of Technology have helped establish its reputation as one of the best and the most popular between universities.
