Downtown Kitchener

In response to a 42-storey tower proposed for Victoria Street South near Park Street in Kitchener:
Quote:
May 1, 2023 - Responding to concerns that tower heights proposed here and in other developments along Victoria Street are increasing further away from downtown, Dumart said there are about 10 taller buildings in approval or construction in the downtown.

May 13, 2023 - Kitchener is definitely getting tall and it's happened really fast with all of the tall buildings being proposed in the last 6 years. Overall Kitchener currently has 28 buildings in various stages of development that are 30 floors or higher, 11 of them are 40 floors or taller, and 3 of them are 50 floors or taller and will be tall enough to be considered skyscrapers (150m), there are also a few projects that aren't publicly announced yet but are rumored to be 50+ stories. Meanwhile Cambridge and Waterloo have a combined 3 buildings that are proposed at or above 30 floors. So any development in the region is really focused on Kitchener.

There could be a thousand proposed skyscrapers. It doesn't change the skyline. That said, some get built. It will be a taller skyline. It won't necessarily be a nice or nicer skyline or will downtown's urban context gain from them if they end up looking like that one.

^Nice! Giving me very QC vibes with McNabs as a mini Orleans from that vantage point.

Yes as far as I know.

Montreal in the smog yesterday.

Really nice MTL shots!

All lining up with the tallest to beat the Viewcones?

That's right... including U/C towers, the roof height of the 7 tallest buildings will all be within 5 metres of each other.

I guess I've pretty much made up my mind....I don't like the national bank tower!

The Philips square tower though is dope. It's got a diet-sears tower vibe.

The National Bank tower is an average big glass box. Montreal didn't have one quite like that, so now we do. I find that it looks okay from certain angle...

There are still some valleys between those peaks. There could be an argument for table legs. However, there is no table top and a 200 metre tall one at that. What does Kitchener have? A virtual skyline of proposed towers? cause there isn't all that much now.

the cladding is quite mediocre with a vision glass panel and a thick spandrel glass spacer separated via a silver mullion

It does look better from the street. And it's true it does give us the standard mediocre blue box unit. I don't hate it. Mediocre is the correct way to see it.

That being said, the VSLP turned out much better than I had anticipated. And the surprise height downgrade of the NBC tower helps the VSLP stand out a bit.
