Green Island, Ottawa, with Old City Hall (mot the John D. Diefenbaker Building, Foreign Affairs).

^^ Those are spectacular drone photos.

One Wall Centre no longer towers above the rest like it used to.

All great shots, but I like the second to last one there with the 5 tallest buildings in succession.

Vancouver by far makes for the best skyline shots in Canada.

Indeed. Each tower is stylistically different. They have similar massing and good spacing. There's also a good street wall of mid rise development pre and post war.

I agree with you all. I really like the variety and texture seen in the skyline here. Having a strong difference in designs really helps.

Agreed. Love the spacing requirements on each block/site and how it permits so much light penetration.

Man, the Edmonton skyline now is really at top form. Thats the type of skyline that catches my attention: a swaths of buildings with one singular pinnacle at its centre. I prefer this than the endless sea of nameless towers.

I agree. That tiered segmenting of a skyline is very pleasing to the eye in a classical stylization of the urban environment from the air.

Montreal has really done a great job in that sense as well, although with a much more complete, denser stock (owing to a several century head start of course, and solid urban planning guidelines since then)

Same. It reminds me of skylines in the American Midwest. It would be great if Montreal did the same. A couple of very tall highrises strategically placed in the middle of the skyline would instantly put it in a different league skyline-wise.

While I somewhat agree with your premise, I actually enjoy Montreal's skyline as is. It's not a haphazard mess of towers, it's a meticulously well designed skyline deliberately stunted in height, and lengthened linearly. Now, it's in the process of widening at the same time. The appeal of MTL's skyline is the layering of visual styles, a slow build up of scale, from the edges to the centre. Rather than having a single pinnacle feature, we've got multiple marquee skyscrapers, all of good quality, with generous spaces between them. As the skyline grows, individual towers remain visible and present. That adds a sense of individuality that is quite pleasing to the eye. If we do the pinnacle style like Edmonton, then we've lost originality. Let's accept what we have and where we're going with it.

I would however like to see a whole new and different skyline that is more in line with what you suggested in Laval, or the south shore.

You have a point. There’s a few gaps in the Montreal skyline that have been annoying me for years however - around Central station for instance. Filling those up would do wonders. At least many of them have disappeared over the last few years.

That annoying gap created by central station (ie that hideous bunker) would be the only place I'd accept to have a breakthrough pinnacle tower. But to have any real impact it would have to be at least 250m in height. I wouldn't mind this, but it would have to be a skyline-defining feature, with true aesthetic values and proper materials, a true icon, not a random cominar condo. I'm not sure we're ever going to see this happen.
