As great as this project turned out, I can't help but laugh at how small the rooftop pool ended up compared to the renderings. Overall though project is really great.

They couldn't bother to update the bait and switch full size pool rendering with the person swimming laps -- after the small soaker bathtub was installed, huh. Same thing happened with Mondrian, and the hot tub at Soho Champagne.

They're building massive planters in front of the Charlotte on the Rideau St facade!

Normally I'd be completely in favor of those type of planters vs the small holes they usually put urban trees in but I feel like those are taking 3/4 of the sidewalk width and leaving very little space for pedestrians

I guess they are trying to avoid it being a loitering area. With the narrow path they won't be able to lie there without blocking the sidewalk so will move a few meters down on someone else's property. Very smart and I guess it was allowed as the developer is paying for the repaving/beautification.

While this is a horrible landscape design, at least it diverts attention away from that large Trinity eyesore for a few seconds.

Maybe this is to deter the future Homeless Highway between the Market Shelters and the Vanier Super Shelter from forming on the South Side of Rideau. Create choke points to force the flow of least resistance over to the far wider sidewalk on the opposite side of the street. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I'm not kidding. There will be a lot of movement between facilities along this stretch, and I'm sure Richcraft is aware of this.

I'm not sure if 6 foot wide planter boxes are necessary for sidewalk trees. I like my little conspiracy theory more These planters looks like they are strategically sized and placed to eliminate loitering space.

This city has plenty of anti-homeless measures like bench splitters.

These look like exactly the same planter boxes as at the 150 Elgin Sconewitch. Down to the pavers.

The Hideaway does a good job of street planters on McLeod to similar dimensions, but they push pedestrians to the curb rather than towards the retail frontage.

Maybe we can't use sidewalk drainage as consistent watering for street trees in Canada, given the absolutely ridiculous amount of salt we spread everywhere? Even after paying a contractor to drive up and down Bank Street and Lansdowne with a giant watering hose tanker truck every day, these trees with sidewalk drains still die, the salt doesn't get washed out enough. I know we've discussed all this before.

OSEG has decided to go with raised planters with drip irrigation, after learning their lesson.

The City has decided to bash their heads against the sidewalk, planting new trees with sidewalk and street drains to 'filter salt and other contaminants' despite admitting that the trees died due to contaminants. Smart.

Actually it's quite remarkable how we in Ottawa manage to completely entomb our trees in concrete and asphalt and most soldier on despite not growing much year on year. This is tree abuse!
