Many of the proposals received by Karnataka pertain to setting up electrolyser plants in the Mangalore region and storing the hydrogen produced in the form of ammonia. This is because storing hydrogen, which is the lightest element, as liquid or gas requires high pressure and extremely low temperatures. Liquid ammonia can be stored at -33°C.

“All these projects that have come are looking at exporting hydrogen,” said Gunjan Krishna, Karnataka’s commissioner for industrial development, at a recent press conference. Water availability and the presence of a port in Mangalore makes it a preferred location for these plants, explains Doddabasavaraju, managing director of Karnataka Udyog Mitra, the single-window agency for industrial project approvals. Besides, the added attraction is that about 220 acres of land and infrastructure is available under the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ).

Meeting the land requirement for a cluster, however, will be a challenge given that the individual plant proposals are in the range of 200-300 acres each. Hence, the new projects are currently looking at the minimum requirement of 80-100 acres to establish a plant and start operations, says Doddabasavaraju.

The government will also establish a two-lakh square feet 'Mangaluru Innovation Hub' through Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation (KEONICS), aimed at encouraging industrial development of coastal districts, he said, addressing the Mangaluru Technovanza organised by the Mangaluru Cluster of Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM). The minister said the innovation hub will be established in cooperation with Infosys and other companies, which will cater to the industrial development of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Kodagu districts. Narayan praised the coastal region, especially Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, for being the cradle of banking. The region has a suitable, conducive and enterprising environment and the government is keen to develop the Mangaluru region as a fintech hub, he said. He said the government is keen on establishing at least 50 fintech companies in the Mangaluru cluster. This will give a big boost to the government's plan to achieve USD 500 billion business turnover by 2030 from these companies, Narayan said."Just as Bengaluru city has become famous as India's Silicon Valley due to the IT/BT companies, Mangaluru should become Silicon Beach," he said.Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with several companies and the minister inaugurated the Mangaluru office of payment gateway firm Cashfree.

The government will look into the available space in Infosys, Robosoft Technologies and Sahyadri campus in Mangaluru and how it can be made use for providing space for the Start Ups and other industry players who wish to start their base in Mangaluru.

Speaking at ‘Mangaluru Technovanza’ as part of the ‘Beyond Bengaluru’ initiative of KDEM in Mangaluru on Saturday, he said the government is setting up three CoEs in the areas of AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Cartoon), fintech and cybersecurity.

“We have identified Mangaluru as a prime contributor towards the country’s tech aspirations and will wholly invest in the cluster’s people, ideas, and entrepreneurial spirit,” he said.
