The Oriental rug in my living room pays homage to the original Hall of Records building, and it's positioned on an angle.

Although images has been posted in the past, can anyone put up side-by-side aerial images of the 1913 Hall of Records - before and after street realignment?

Poking around here and there for more on the Los Angeles Terminal Railway, I ran across the Gordon Arms Hotel on lovely Terminal Island.

I don't believe the Gordon Arms has been seen at NLA before:


From eBay; but originally from a piece in the June 1899 issue of Land of Sunshine.

Here's a murkier shot, showing it in its surroundings. We're looking towards San Pedro:

Almost all references in the city directories refer to a Bush St. in San Francisco. That's why i thought it might be misspelled.

e_r, Denver Avenue seems to have become Arapahoe Street about the beginning of 1897. We see the familiar name Charles Lummis as the writer of a note published on Valentine's Day 1897 crabbing somewhat cryptically about the changing of street names, from which I excerpt:


LA Times, February 14, 1897

And indeed one T Nielsen "groceries and provisions" who was at the corner of Washington and Denver in 1896 is found at the (northeast) corner of Washington and Arapahoe in 1897 (info from the CDs). Denver Avenue seems to have run from 9th St. to Washington, going by various little references of the time in the LA Herald and LA Times.

This permit is dated 12/2/1915, the city was still using Denver Ave. at that time.....and Mr. Dougherty was still the owner, although he had moved to E. 24th St.

This original snapshot of a dandy gentleman in downtown Los Angeles was listed on eBay a month or so ago. (I forgot to post it)








I'd love to know who this dude is. (here's a closer look)



I see the Pantages Building down the street so this must be Broadway.*


*But there was also a Pantages at Hill and Seventh. I don't remember which location came first.

At 4901 Telegraph Road in East LA will be found this unprepossessing structure:

This view is from a few years ago; but I chose it rather than the current one because it still shows "Grindall Co."

Circa 1978, I had occasion to zoom past this building on the freeway every day I went to work. I looked forward to it, because at that time, it sported, with the company's name, a vivid and beautiful painted representation of a circular saw throwing off sparks. Some years later, it was repainted with much the same picture, but done with less skill; and ultimately, as we see, the picture disappeared altogether, and now in 2022 the company itself is gone.

In 1978-1979, I had every intention of stopping some day and taking a photo of that impressive wall-sign, just for memory's sake; but somehow, and regrettably, I never got around to it. And so I post this in the hope that, by some remarkable chance, someone else has a picture--or at least a fond memory--of this.

I tried my darndest to find the circular saw giving off sparks, odinthor, but my quest ended in failure.

I did find out that the Grindall Co. occupied a similar building one block away.

Of course this is neither here nor there in terms of the missing sign.


The closest I came to a circular saw in motion was this ad. (no sparks)




It's not the Grindall Co. but it's located in Los Angeles. (does that count? )

Isn't the Hollywood Presbyterian Church in the background on or near Highland? Could this photo be looking north on Highland, or is the street too narrow to be Highland? Highland must be very close, probably to the right.

Looking at the Hollywood sign, I can almost make out the scar where "land" was until just a few years earlier. Didn't they remove "land" in the late 40s?

Agree. Appears to be Colonna, Bob Hope's sidekick for years back then.

Like ethereal says, Danny Thomas is about 3 photos to the right of Jimmy Durante, and just to the left of Collona with the lady in between? Who is the lady? My wild guess would be Mary Astor, but probably not. She has a Mary Astor hairdo. Could she be the actress who played D. Thomas's wife in "Make Room For Daddy", later called "The Danny Thomas Show", hence the photo proximity? Wikipedia says Jean Hagan played his wife in the first few years, followed by Marjorie Lord. The photo is pretty fuzzy. I don't think it is Hagan, well known for her roles in "The Asphalt Jungle" and the silent star in "Singing in the Rain", who can't do dialogue, who makes Debbie Reynolds dubb her singing. So, could the photo to the right of Thomas be Marjorie Lord?

The Naples Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge survived the demolition of it's old home in 1965 by moving next door to 1514 Gower.

Here it is in it's new place later that same year as seen on an Ed Ruscha drive-by shot.
