KUALA LUMPUR: Dassault Aviation sees Asia Pacific as one of its strongest and biggest business aviation market with Malaysia as one of its most important clients in the region.

The company's head of Southeast Asia and Pacific for civil aircraft Didier Raynard said the demand for business aviation jets was increasing in the region as it gave another option for clients to travel given the limited commercial airline capacity that was available currently.

"If you have started travelling again, you can see that there is much less frequency (of commercial flights). It means that you have much less choice in terms of timing. It'll probably take a long time or a few years (for commercial aviation) to come back to the previous level (pre-pandemic).

"The pandemic has probably accelerated the decision of some users that were probably chartering before and see the real value of business aviation. It's not a luxury tool, it's really a business tool," he said at a media briefing on Dassault's latest Falcon 6X aircraft here yesterday.

Didier said Dassault was expanding its existing maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang to cater to more business aviation aircraft of different manufacturers from countries in the Asia Pacific region.

He said the new RM100 million purpose-built facility, to be managed by ExecuJet MRO Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd, would be capable of maintaining all aircraft from light maintenance to heavy maintenance, including C-checks.

The 144,000 sqft MRO facility is slated to be opened end of 2023. Dassault acquired ExecuJet in 2019.

Meanwhile, the twinjet long-range Dassault Falcon 6X that could fit up to 16 passengers has garnered a strong interest in the Asia Pacific including Malaysia.

"The aircraft is perfectly adapted for the markets here in Southeast Asia or Asia Pacific in general. Our clients want a big, comfortable cabin. They are extremely concerned about safety, fuel efficiencies, cost of operating, so when the 6X enters into service, it will be very well perceived in the market," Didier said.

The Falcon 6X, which can fly up to 11 hours non-stop, is slated to enter into service by mid-2023. The price per fully equipped aircraft is around US$57 million.

The aircraft offers the most interior space in the 5,000 nautical miles segment and features the highest and widest cross-section of any purpose-built business jet.

AT&S Kulim plant likely to start ops in 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: The construction of the Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik AG (AT&S) plant facility in Kulim Hi-Tech Park is on track despite challenges posed by rising raw material costs and the recent minimum wage hike.

AT&S Malaysia managing director Vittorio Villari said the company completed the piling work in April, and the overall construction progress of the facility had now reached 12 per cent from its commencement in November 2021.

Villari said the increasing price of building materials posed a minimal impact on the company.

"Similarly, with the minimum wage increase announced by the government starting last May, the effect is insignificant.

"We are confident that the construction of this factory will be completed on schedule, and we expect to start production of products as early as 2024," he told The New Straits Times.

AT&S has chosen Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah for its first production site in Southeast Asia.

The Austrian firm, which has a presence in Nanjangud, India; Chongqing and Shanghai in China; and Ansan, South Korea, is building a new modern facility in Kulim with an investment of RM8.5 billion under Phase 1 of the project.

Meanwhile, Villari said the Malaysian training campus, which is also part of the overall project in Kulim Hi-Tech Park, will create approximately 6,000 jobs after completion.

"AT&S Malaysia is now actively hiring engineers, production and administrative staff, and so far has employed more than 400 employees. This is higher than our initial target of 300 employees for the first half of this year.

"Most technical employees will be seconded to AT&S Chongqing for on-job training and then carry out technology transfer to the Malaysian campus," he said.

AT&S is one of the world's leading manufacturers of the high-end printed circuit board (PCB) and integrated circuit (IC) substrates, serving industries such as consumer electronics, computers, communication, semiconductors, automotive, aviation, industrial, and medical.

IC substrates provide connections between silicon dies and PCBs and are used for cloud edge computing, data centres, server farms, and consumer devices.

Villari said AT&S plans to carry out extensive research and development (R&D) activities at the new site, which involve investigating cooperation and partnerships with leading universities in Malaysia.

He said that the company is looking to establish an integrated circuit (IC) substrate institute in Malaysia, which it believes will be the first of its kind globally.

"These partnerships will not only help the company to discover new paths for the microelectronics industry but also make an important contribution to the development of the microelectronics industry in Malaysia," he said.

According to Villari, the company is scouting for the right university and needs to identify several potential universities for this project.

"We expect to end the discussion within this year. It will be one of those already established universities involved in the microelectronics industry because we don't have the time and cannot afford to build it up from scratch," he added.

The industrial space solutions provider said the contract came on the heels of HQ Pack taking delivery of its recently-completed 60,000 square feet manufacturing facility in i-Park@Indahpura in November 2021.

AME group managing director Kelvin Lee Chai said HQ Pack's fast-paced expansions would have a positive multiplier effect on job creation in Johor, with HQ Pack's workforce expected to exceed 400-strong by 2023 from 210 currently.

Lee said the quality of workforce would also be enhanced, given HQ Pack's high-technology expertise.

"Continued large-scale investments such as this affirm Johor's position as one of the top five states in Malaysia for total approved investments," he said in a statement.

HQ Pack, a subsidiary of Netherlands-based high-tech packaging manufacturer HQ Pack B.V, has established presence in Malaysia since 2010.

Together with facilities in Singapore and the United States, it develops, produces and distributes packaging for high-quality and fragile industrial products for leading companies.

HQ Pack had the groundbreaking ceremony of its sixth facility in i-Park@Indahpura today, which will feature an agreed lettable area of 100,000 square feet, comprising a warehouse and office block.

The facility is slated for completion in the second half of 2023.

AME is currently constructing three integrated industrial parks in Johor: i-Park@Indahpura (Phase 3), i-Park@Senai Airport City (Phases 1, 2 and 3) and i-TechValley.

Leuze Electronic plans to double investment to RM200 mil in Melaka

MELAKA (July 20): German-based global optical sensor manufacturer Leuze Electronic Malaysia Sdn Bhd plans to increase its investment to RM200 million in the near future with the operation of its new plant in Bukit Rambai here early last year.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali said the company had invested RM100 million, including for its factory building cost of RM50 million with eight production lines.

He said the company offered 100 job opportunities, of which 95% were filled by those living around Bukit Rambai and Tanjung Minyak.

“Today, we inaugurated Leuze Electronic’s new plant which started operations early last year. It took 16 months to construct after a long delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Leuze Electronic is expected to double its investment (here) and the State government will help it in its expansion," he told reporters after officiating at Leuze Electronic here on Wednesday.

Also present was senior State Executive Councillor for investment, industry and entrepreneur development Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Sulaiman said the investment will be of great benefit not only to the State's economy but it will also provide jobs for the local people.

Meanwhile, Ab Rauf said investments by German companies in Melaka reached almost RM15 billion, including that from Leuze Electronic and Infineon Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

He said these investments by almost 10 German companies underscores Melaka as one of the best investment destinations.

Malaysia to be manufacturing hub for Ericsson's 5G equipment in APAC

KUALA LUMPUR (July 23): Malaysia has been selected as a manufacturing hub for 5G telecom equipment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, producing Ericsson's latest and most advanced 5G radios beginning from the third quarter of this year.

Its president and chief executive officer (CEO) for Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh David Hägerbro said Malaysia will be the first in Southeast Asia to manufacture Ericsson's 5G equipment for domestic and regional markets.

"Supporting the decision to make Malaysia a regional manufacturing hub are the availability of a skilled workforce and the strong infrastructure that Malaysia offers.

"It is also an expression of Ericsson’s long-term commitment to the country, including the 5G network that we are rolling out," he said in a statement on Saturday (July 23).

On Friday, Ericsson group president and CEO Borje Ekholm together with Hägerbro called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in Putrajaya to further discuss Ericsson's commitment to Malaysia.

According to Hägerbro, in line with these manufacturing plans, Ericsson will be stepping up its investments and creating more employment opportunities in the country.

"Complementing the manufacturing will be our regional distribution centre at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as well as the maintenance and support centre in Shah Alam which will allow us to improve response and delivery of support services to customers in the APAC region," he added.

In addition, he said Ericsson has also initiated the Ericsson Educate — a partnership with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Digital Nasional Bhd — to help educate Malaysian students on 5G and other emerging technologies.

"The collaboration is expected to reach up to 1,200 students in the first year and will enable UTM students to participate and contribute to the country’s digital economy and Industry 4.0 transformation.

"In fact, Malaysia's first innovation centre to research and test 5G technology was set up by Ericsson at UTM in 2016," he said.

Cambridge medical institute seeks to optimise educational links with Malaysian students

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 9): The Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease (CITIID), housed within the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre (JCBC) in Cambridge, the UK, looks to optimise educational connections with Malaysian students.

CITIID director Professor Ken Smith, who is currently visiting Malaysia, said there is an enormous opportunity for bilateral exchanges, particularly for Malaysian students, to contribute solutions on clinical problems.

Highlighting that there were already popular Sunway-Cambridge medical seminars taking place, he said more can be done in "linking connectivity with the services in Malaysia".

He said CITIID's current research is "playing to Cambridge strength with a focus on Malaysian problems". The institute also hopes to collect more input from Malaysian scientists.

"The key thing to do is to identify common problems that are important in Malaysia, where we have the technology and capacity and interest in.

"That will happen around infectious disease in particular and we have strong groups working across the range of viruses," he told The Edge after a media briefing which he shared on CITIID and JCBC's joint fight against Covid-19.

The JCBC which opened in late 2019, weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic started, brought together the CITIID, the Wellcome Trust-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute and the Milner Therapeutics Institute.

Smith said the CITIID, with many infectious disease scientists and immunologists under one roof, quickly pivoted its research during the period to tackle the Covid-19 virus.

Smith added that he believes the coming together builds synergy and drive, and that the set-up of the JCBC will be able to find answers, not just for current problems but also for future infections.

Despite challenging soil conditions and the impact of Covid-19-related restrictions, Kerian Solar reached its COD 22 months after commencing construction activities in October 2020, with Ditrolic Energy as the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contractor.

Engie Australia and Southeast Asia renewables managing director Thierry Kalfon said the commissioning of the company's first solar farm in Malaysia is an important step towards delivering its renewable growth ambitions in Southeast Asia.
