As unattractive as Liberty Sky may be, the award for ugliest new building is going to go to The Randi (or whatever the building on the corner of 2nd East and 2nd South is called now). It's atrocious.

I like Liberty Sky and the contrast between the concrete and glass.

Hmm, doesn't seem so bad on Google map views. Liberty Sky does have a certain spare and spartan industrial look. It will probably grow on me. The Maverik building right next door probably helps to ugly that whole area up. As for unattractive, that three story Brighton Bank stucco abortion on 300 S, state, just curdles my blood. I can't even drive state street knowing I will have to pass by it.

I believe just an oversight on the main page, if you click through to Phase 2, you'll see that the design and the schedule include the 500W and 300W blocks in Phase 2 in the recent open house documents. Here's the mock up for those blocks.

This is so awesome and is going to be huge boon to the Granary, Central 9th, and more.

The very positive outcome on Liberty Sky is that there is only one of that particular balcony design. Whereas with Vancouver and Ala Moana they're everywhere. While Liberty Sky is definitely not my favorite so far, the top saves it for me. I love 95 S. State and The Hyatt. The only critical comment I would have about The Hyatt is its width from that certain western perspective. I think The West Quarter Phase II will cut that up very nicely. I have zero complaints about the upcoming designs of the Convexity, Astra, Theater, and Domain towers. I'm really looking forward to this next round of towers.

Excellent watch, as usual Dave brings up points I'd previously never considered, even when I already agree with what he's saying. This sort of communication could potentially go a ways in swaying public opinion on things like density or height limits among certain groups

However, that kind of design is starting to accumulate some tradition behind it which makes it recognizable. So I know this sounds like -and maybe it is- a backhanded compliment, but that tower only happens in downtown SLC. And that's pretty cool. Maybe developers should start employing some LDS pastiche?
That's an interesting point and I understand where you're coming from. LDS architecture is definitely distinctive. That said, I still don't like how uncomplementary they are. I think it would be cool in a building that's already stone or stucco, but I would've preferred the church be fit into the design of the building instead of just awkwardly slapped into the base. Of course, I am just one person, and if others find it bitchin', then by all means, enjoy it!

I like the church portion of the building, but the thing I don't like is the transition. I get that they wanted to have a balcony here, but it would've looked much better if the glass came all the way down to the roof of the chapel.

Also, I really hate that they wrapped these pillars at the ground level in metal. They should've wrapped them in stone.

How do you think I feel? I'm sitting in that building right now.

Let me just add that I also hate the Brighton Bank building! What a tragic waste of a prime corner downtown. It seems like we heard some investor bought that lot and plan on building something big. Not sure if that is true or not! Let’s hope so!

The bank building is owned by the same developer as the Astra and the tire shop across the street from Convexity.

The Bank was going to be next after Astra but with Convexity happening, the tire shop is now number 2 and the Bank is project #3.

This information is many months old and projects could have changed but I am doubtful that they have changed.

I am not a fan of the Brighton Bank Building but it's at least tolerable compared to what they did to the 324 Building across the street:

What is crazy about the 324 is the insane amount of floor space. There is no gap in the center of the building. There was a suite in the center of the third floor that was a basketball court in size, with no windows (as it’s in the center) had hallways all the way around. The garage levels don’t match the building floors as it was rebuilt which makes it odd for trying to find your way.

The bank building has always been my least favorite downtown and have complained about it for years, especially because of its location. I'll be glad to see it demoed and put that corner to much better use.

I agree, and as sacrosanct as it may be, I would demolish the Auerbach building as well. Unless they could restore it to its previous rendition.

Last night I was bored and watched the SLC Planning Commission meeting. The PC initiated a petition to make all ADU's permitted uses rather than conditional. That could help eliminate at least one existing barrier.

Man I hope so. What a waste of everyone's time and money it is to make ADUs a conditional use.
