Took a few photos at Astra yesterday. Sorry if they are a little blurry, It was cold and getting dark.

(Removed images because they were huge, how do I make them not take up the whole page? Here is the album: https://imgur.com/a/96jpPey)

650 Main has turned out much better than expected. Very nice looking building and it has really changed the character of that intersection for the better.

Great pictures, thanks. Twilight is my favorite time of day in SLC, particularly in the late summer.

Imgur automatically creates resized copies of any images that you upload. If you take the direct link to the hosted image and add an "h" after the image code and before the filetype (usually ".jpg" or ".png"), it will link to the "huge" resized version that typically fits well into SSP's format. There are also other letters like "l" for large and "s" for small. Here are your images using the "h" suffix:

Liberty Sky is officially open and residents are moving in. And it looks like both Seven 02 and The Birdie (or whatever it's called now) are within a few weeks of completion.

Reeder, thanks for the pics of 650 South Main. It looks like Lowe Development builds a good product based on what we are seeing with the Dixon Apartments and this project. Hey, did someone say that the city plans on burying the power lines along 600 South? That would sure make a big improvement for this street?

Same. I went by the shops on Main Street that are to be closed and none seem to even be preparing for it. I was expecting to see at least a ‘location closing soon’ or ‘closing sale’ sign or something to that effect on on at least one of them.

I heard they have to be out by the end of this month. Otherwise, I'm guessing they'll be evicted.

I think part of the save the pantages group became a tenant as a last ditch effort to gum up the works. I could be wrong though. I’ve heard a lot of strange goings on with this one

It has always seemed odd to me that they would build 2 identical developments with 2 separate identical parking garages right next to each other... Surely it would've been easier or cheaper to just build one parking garage? Or are there benefits to 2? It gives me hope maybe they will change the design for the other half of the site (not that the design is bad at all)

I’m fine with that building on the corner, but I don’t another next door. Hopefully there will be some sort of change.

Update on Main Street Apartment Tower demolition

I talked to one of the tenants of the property to be demolished and he told me

he was told they had to the end of this month to vacate but that they were trying to get a 1-month extension to the end of February but dont know if the extension will be granted.

The SLC government facebook page posted a new survey on building heights:

Quote:
Hello Salt Lake City Residents! Salt Lake City has initiated a process of updating zoning code sections in the downtown area to address building heights and elements that impact public spaces. As part of the process, we have put together a survey to collect feedback from Salt Lake City residents and the community. Results from this survey will help inform the development of zoning standards. Your input is critical to ensuring the project is based on Salt Lake City's values. http://bit.ly/slc-communitysurvey

It would remove the need for design review for exceeding 100' mid-block like today.

My issue is that outside of the direct downtown area (West Temple and 200 East and 100 South and 400 South) that is currently zoned D1 would see the maximum height drop from 375' to 250'. So rather than expand heights through a larger area, it is a reduction in area. The only exchange that is offered for this reduction in area is an increase in as of right height for mid-block locations.

Then the heights for the Depot and Granary areas are still to short. They need a 50% increase at a minimum.

I think that at least in the Depot and Downtown areas, the maximum height should be unlimited when going through a design review. Granary maybe should be set to a max height of 375' through a design review for now unless it is along Trax, then no limit.

While the opinion may not be shared by many, I think that we need to encourage and even offer increased height for better density, affordable housing options, transit improvements, mid block connections, public parks, etc. that benefit the community and the city overall. Usually these are called out during the design review process but maybe if they are included in the filing process. Perhaps a scoring system could be built as a way to bypass the design review process to expedite the proposal to construction process.

I don’t imagine these kinds of surveys get many people involved, so I encourage all of you to say something.

I am now SURVEY-VAXXED. Fill out the survey today! It only takes a few minutes. At the end i wrote (IMHO) that current and proposed CBD heights should allow for higher buildings. The illustration they used showed a skyline that looks like a table. Put a tablecloth over it and you could serve brunch! I mean, really unimaginative and boring.

The average person walking down the street has no clue how to design a city, so why ask in the first place? Unfortunately I'm not so sure SLC has enough qualified people in place to properly design a city either. IMO it's time for SLC to significantly raise the height limits across all downtown zones.
