I know you are talking about the over all building design effect and from a distance, I agree. But I love my single (albeit large - ~16 x 8') balcony.

Neighbours chat from floor to floor just like ground-dwelling neighbours chat over the fence; it feels like it is my space, not a continuation of common walls even outside; I can see the view in 3 directions without a concrete wall; and it feels more secure (no-one climbing around a barrier to enter my apartment).
