Place: Alma Duncan Salon, Ottawa Art Gallery, 50 Mackenzie King Bridge

Any SSPers feel like meeting up there to check it out in person? Harley? I could make it for 6:30 or 7ish. We could always stop by Albion Rooms across the road for a craft beverage and chat after. I'm pretty sure these venues barrier/stair free.

I have an appointment at 5:30. I'll likely drop by afterwards.

I like! The large open atrium, the wood accents, the plenitude of windows, it's nice! Not too boring but nothing over the top either.

The views inside looking towards the river and Lebreton Flats are really nice. Would be a cool spot to hangout, enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon, grab a coffee.

I'm curious to see what the "green roof" will look like... Will it have an open section for the public (like roof-top patio) or is it just sod on the roof...

I'm curious about that too. The Citizen article mentioned a rooftop cafe, but the pictures show a cafe on the ground floor and don't seem to mention anything about the roof.

I am pretty impressed though!

Floor plans came out in November (see CBC article below). There's a café with a roof-top terrace on level L5.

Edmonton's is the Imperial Library (Darth Vader Memorial); this one is the National Library of Endor.

On an architectural level, I don't think the overall impact of the structure is as immediately stunning to me as Calgary's but I think it works well and fits the character of Ottawa without being too boring. The more I look at it, the more I like it. And yes, it's leagues ahead of the godawful Edmonton library.

The meat of a library though is really its interior and I'm loving the inside of the library. It's inviting and beautiful in a way that I think surpasses the interiors of the Calgary library (based on renders and photos online) which goes more for the feel of a magnificent gallery space I feel like that just feels a tad bit less accessible. Looking at the Halifax library interiors as well, I think we may have come out with the best overall interiors as that one also goes for a clean white space that looks good but again, feels a bit more sterile.

In contrast, the Ottawa library interiors feel just right for a library to me. I love the curving roof with the beams from the inside and the giant window views of Ottawa with lots of wooden touches. I think the curve of the roof really adds a warmth and relaxed feel to the space that the other libraries don't quite have. The whole look is simultaneously beautiful and cozy in a way that I just think libraries should strive for. It feels modern but also with a kind of old-school restraint that I like for a library. So I'm pretty happy so far overall. I think I could spend lots of time in this library and that's what's important.

Calgary's library is a touch disjointed with the focus on the grand atrium, though it is a stunning space. The great reading room on the top floor is spectacular as well. My biggest complaint about the library here is that it doesn't really interact well at the street level, but given that it's built over the LRT tunnel, that's understandable lol.

This one looks like it could engage the street a bit better as well, but aside from that it looks like a solid 9/10!

Based on Tierney's speech:

The OPL portion of the project is only 34% larger than the current central library. They expect to more than double the number of annual visitors. 200,000 items in the collection. A green roof. 60+ meeting rooms compared to 3 in the current central branch. Maker spaces. Recording studio (maybe with some Nickelback in there) with musical lending library. Ground floor café. Rooftop restaurant.

Underbuilt or right-sized? Ottawa's extensive network of branch libraries perhaps puts less pressure on the central library.

That's the question. Ottawa tends to underbuild a lot of things, so who knows. Having LAC in there helps to make the facility look closer to what a city our size should have.
