There is an on-ramp for the 417 West at Rochester.

It seems like a circuitous route but it's the consistently quickest one I've found.
The few times I have had to drive from Gatineau to Stittsville in rush hour, Google Maps had me use Portage Bridge to the SJAM Parkway. It then had me go all the way to Carling and strangely turn east back to Woodroffe and hop on the 417 there. This was surprisingly fast. I'm guessing the whole Woodroffe/Carling/Woodroffe routing from the parkway was too slow, so it was faster to go the long way. I have learned to trust Google Maps most of the time (though it does suggest some strange things sometimes).

One of my alternate routes to get to the 417 west is Maisonneuve-Portage-SJAM-Carling-Pinecrest-417W.

That depends on where you are going.

It works for all of the destinations I would use the 417 West for.

Roughly, and in no particular order:

Toronto
North Bay
Thousand Islands Bridge and I-81
Canadian Tire Centre
Tanger Outlets
Bayshore

It's also a good route to get to IKEA.

I used to live off Greenbank, and that route was good. But anything east of that is not good, as it is hard to get off the SJAM at Woodroffe and Island Park, and Parkdale is never not congested. Now I live off Woodroffe and it is practically useless.

As I said above, to get to Woodroffe, try taking it to Carling and then head east on Carling (keeping left on the SJAM Parkway). A bit further, but it avoids all of the congestion.

Taking Lyon down to the 417 is usually easier, although I haven't taken this route yet during rush hour.

The bulk of the congestion is during rush hour.

(Sarcasm alert) Gee, I could never have known ... But this route could and should be improved. Maybe remove the confusing 2 way on Lyon between Laurier and Wellington, and remove a few lights on Kent

LOL. My point was that while Lyon to 417 is great when there is little to no congestion, SJAM to Carling and back to Woodroffe is better when there is heavy congestion on the 417 (like during rush hour).

This is the route I generally take when going to weeknight Sens games with my buddies, when the game's traffic is mixed in with westbound rush hour traffic for the entire length of the 417. At least we bypass most of that on SJAM.

You live in Gatineau? Also, is this a competition to see which thread on the Ottawa Transport Sub Forum can be the most off from the name?

The SJAM is gennerally less congested, but it is quite bendy and no lights so unusable winter evenings.

Well that depends. I guess for people with vision issues in dark conditions that's a consideration. Not for most drivers though.

In rain or snow, the A50 between Buckingham and Mirabel is scary as all hell because of the lack of both lighting and barriers between the opposite lanes. The 174 is also pretty bad through the Greenbelt.

The 174? Why haven't they upgraded it by now?

Also, I think either get rid of the SJAM and make it a park or make the intersections at Island Park and Woodrofe better. For more SJAM go to http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=237492
Isn't a thread for the Ottawa Bypass Corridor?

Ottawa must be the only big city in Canada with only 1 highway that services (or crosses) the city. IMO the 174 and 416 don't really count as they don't really service intracity travel much - more long-distance travel.

I mean Toronto arguably has 1 highway for many people as most refuse to pay for the 407.
