Downtown = Bad, Suburbs = good?

No idea what some of these downtown haters are doing on a forum focused on urbanism.

Where does it say that this forum is focused on urbanism? Some of you need to stop making assumptions because the majority of the time you're wrong.

Skyscraperpage. Seeing lots in your suburb?

Again. It’s not suburbansinglefamilydoublefrontgaragecopyofmyneighbourpage.com

I was going to try and be rational with you but given that 90%+ of your posts have either been trolling other users or insulting Daemon I decided not to waste my time. I will say this in response to your dumbass comment--look at the entire site FFS!

New libraries constitute the heart of cities, providing spaces for civil society, encounters and engagement, the spread and creation of knowledge, and are places dreams are made, certainly for the very young, but arguably for all. The network of Calgary public libraries, anchored by the masterpiece in the core that we should all be proud of, delivers programs for all ages, enables literacy and a thirst for learning, and spaces for events initiated by many peoples and groups. It is among the absolute best investments we can make as a progressive society, focused on raising all the boats in our seas.

Anyone catch Chris Hadfield's "Launch" presentation Thursday evening? I heard good things about it, and have a couple of his books. Very inspirational yet level-headed fellow.

Right, because nobody ever needs free meeting rooms, wants to attend public events or workshops or access e-learning resources using a library subscription instead of having to pay for it. A library is quite a bit more than just "books" to a community.

Things I saw in the library that didn’t involve books.

- Children’s play area
- Children’s theatre room
- Science room with active presentations
- Children’s toys/games/puzzles/activity area
- Youth zone with access to sewing machines, crafting tools, art and maker equipment
- Media to borrow such as DVDs etc
- Cafe
- Study areas
- Meeting rooms
- Event spaces
- General printing services
- Computer terminal access
- Main theatre
- Historic archives
- Old Calgary advertisements and print media
- Current magazine/newspapers
- Murals and art displays
- and on and on

Don't forget the free Chromebook automated rental service! Tap your library card, get a Chromebook for 3 hours. An amazing service for lower income peoples. Because of this library, with all of the things Suburgatory mentioned, everyone in this city now has a chance at a good future, despite income levels. This facility is a great equalizer.

When I was walking through on Thursday, I actually said to my friend "this place is going to change this city for the better. Everyone has a chance to be creative and express their imagination now." I'm sorry that so many of you have an incomprehensibly warped view of this place, but I can assure you that just like the Peace Bridge, people are going to use, enjoy, and benefit from this space for a very long time despite your derision.

You could do all those without things in a building that doesn’t cost a quarter of a billion $$

That's the same argument Milli Vanilli had about recording studios, and the burger flippin' fella at McDonald's had about universities.

That kind of thinking is exactly how you get Canada's great cities like Regina, Windsor, Winnipeg, and Edmonton.

I actually agree with you to some degree. Libraries are needed in society, but at the same time, it's a lot of money. More of a vanity project than anything.

Also you should know that the Montreal main library was shut down for a while due to a bed bug ingestion from homeless people. If you go there in a month or soul, make sure you have a shower when you get home.
The fanfare has already died down, I spent all evening in the library yesterday and it was relatively busy but everyone there seemed to be using the library rather than just viewing it. No homeless people. Lots of students.

The fan fare has died down after 4 days? Give it a month or so. better yet go back in January and report back to us. It'll be a lot quieter and a lot more homeless people.

There were lots of tours going on. I counted at least 3 simultaneous tours when I went in to grab a book and walk around.

The fanfare will be done in a month give it take. A couple of hundred thousand people will go down and check it out once look around say ‘wow isn’t this great’ and never come back. The homeless people will be coming in saying ‘wow this is great’ the difference though they’ll be back.
