lol on so many levels.

As I read that article all I could think of was an old guy shaking his fist at the sky and screaming "bureaucrats!"

Who else would think of nicknaming the city after a crude nickname of the sensitive part of a woman's anatomy? that would be the worst idea ever.

Not sure if this is the same one LeftCoaster has hinted at.
Can't confirm or deny.

80 storeys is definitely in play in the metro now. Hopefully it makes it to reality.

Yeah I chuckled at all the dated concepts in his proposals, especially the name "The Big Oyster". Sounds like a seafood restaurant from the 70's or 80's. Also my summary of his proposal was moreso that he wants his name to be an everlasting icon in Vancouver. He reminds me of Mr Fischoeder from Bob's Burgers.

Haha! That made me think of Fringe Towers also.

For those who weren't around SSP in 2004, there was a vague proposal by Hynes Developments and Arthur Erickson for an 80-storey tower on a hypothetical site (which it turned out later didn't exist). There was no location or renderings but the rumour created a ton of hype here on SSP at the time and many forumers couldn't stop talking about it despite there being no information.

Those were much more simpler times. Considering how short the tallest towers at the time have been, it is interesting to hear such rumour was even being entertained...

Hmm, I really hope that you guys are talking about 2 separate projects.

Honestly the idea of our region’s tallest being at Lougheed is more anticlimactic than it being at Brentwood.

Obviously downtown Vancouver would be best (we all know how much that situation sucks though), so after that I would prefer to see our region’s tallest in Metrotown, after that New West, and after that Surrey.

That being said a beggar can’t be a chooser, so obviously I will still be happy to see such a tower built anywhere in our region.

Of course there is the added benefit of there being two taller projects to look forward too if they aren’t the same...

80 storeys would very likely be the tallest in Canada outside of Toronto, so Lougheed would indeed be a strange place for it.

That said it won't be downtown I think we all know that.

The suspense is killing me... I almost would rather not know this is being planned and shocked when the plans came out.

Hopefully the 80 storey tower also has a prominent site on a main thoroughfare and a nice design.

I'm trusting that the 80 storey proposal being bantered about here is different than the 80-storey project put forward in Edmonton.

It’s a mad world when the most appropriate place for an exceptionally tall and precedent-setting tower is precisely where our city leaders forbid it to be.

Yes, because this one will likely get built...

I suggested having an 80-storey tower downtown a few years ago and they called me crazy. Today, having the tallest tower proposed outside Vancouver is actually a good thing because the city would then allow an even taller one downtown for fear or "losing out to the boonies". Competition is sweet.

They can make that into the world's biggest homeless shelter and smoking joint. Homelessness solved!

Welcome to Vancouver. Home of the weird (and even weirder ideas)

Where to put your tallest building? Downtown where literally every other N American city has them? Heck no. Sleepy suburb? yup, perfect spot for it

When will we stop being weird?

If we stopped being weird then we might lose the title of Lotus Land and the media would be up in arms about that. Lol!
