It doesn't look like it was built.

There's nothing where the adobe was on either the 1910 or 1914 Baist Maps.

In 1921 there's a brick building on the site that I believe is marked Auto Supplies.

What's there now might be that same building. There is a March 1998 demo permit for
a 3-story apartment building at 109 14th Place, which might be the one built in 1903
just behind (to the west of) the adobe.

The July 6, 1930, Los Angeles Times describes widening, straightening and other work to be done on 8th Street
between Figueroa and Windsor. Part of the article says, " . . . and ornamental lights of the latest type installed
west of Vermont avenue."

The thing I find odd about the Union Metal photo is that it was taken in 1932 but shows streetcar tracks running along 8th Street. L.A. Railway's 8th Street line was abandoned in 1920.

This is W 8th St looking toward Western Avenue--the LARy 'N' line ended at 8th & Western.... (The western end of the 'N' line became part of the "S' line in 1950, which appears to have lasted until 1963.) (Perhaps Wig-Wag will confirm.) The Washington Building-Loan building was at 817 S Western. We've explored this area before--the Pollo Ala Brassa etc:

Here's a map that may help--the red rectangle indicates the original route of W 8th St and the LARy's N-line tracks along it that came from the east, dead-ending at Western Avenue; the northwesterly cut of 8th seen on the map came later. The green box indicates the approximate location of the Washington Building-Loan building at 317 S Western Ave (seen between the two new lampposts at right in your latest blowup).

Dreams of this intersection being one of a major residential district didn't last long. The Pellissier tract blocks met the Country Club Park tract along Western... I haven't found a pic of the Washington Building-Loan bldg yet

The clue here is the name of the store on the corner on the right: "Edson Furniture." The 1965 CD puts it at 3401 S San Pedro.


Today, it looks like this:

Good job figuring out the location of the photograph Lorendoc. (sorry for the delay buddy. I missed your post earlier)

While trying to find an old photograph (or ads) of/for the Edson Furniture store, southwest corner San Pedro and Jefferson Blvd.

I came across a couple snippets about a crime/kidnapping that happened on that corner.

Although the luminaires were changed to overheads in the 1950s, the Union Metal Poles lasted into early 2015 along this stretch of West 8th Street between Irolo and Western.

Browsing through Calisphere, I found this undated photo captioned "Exterior view of Fashion House Furniture store. Some of the sale prices are advertised on the windows of the store."

At least there is a street number. The city directories at LAPL were no help, but the LA Times had a 1959 display ad listing Fashion House Furniture at 711 N. Fair Oaks in Pasadena. From the picture, I would have guessed South Central. Looks like the air quality has improved in the past 50+ years...

Back to Western Avenue & W 8th.... Notice, ER, that I've added red letters to your blowup.... Here's an aerial taken on December 16, 1931, to which I've added corresponding letters, showing the new direct W 8th St bypass added to the original 90° + 90° routing of W 8th at Western.

A = 800 S Oxford, a single-family house put up by builder Benjamin O. McCormick in 1920; it was moved to 2508 Centinela in 1937 and demolished in 1971 to be replaced with an apt building

B = 801 S Oxford, a single-family house built by Roy O. Dalton in 1922; not sure when it was replaced

C = Pellissier Square Garage

D = Washington Building-Loan building

E = 811 S Western Avenue

Lots of good times on Sunset - Ben Frank's, Whisky, Fifth Estate, Sea Witch, The Trip, underground movies at cinematheque 16, Harry's Open Pit, sitting on the wall that used to be next to the Whisky watching life stroll by....being hassled once by Kim Fowley...shows at the Palladium, Kaleidoscope, Ciro's/Hullaballoo....

Too bad film uses SF band Jefferson Airplane instead to LA groups like Love or The Doors.
