I had a class in there for a 4000 level course, but the prof got us switched into Lamoureux after one or two sessions. I guess we had to kick out a 1000 level class to get the room. So yeah, no one wants to be in the portable and it's stupid that they can't find (or make) room elsewhere.

The Cube hasn't been used for Computer Science for over a decade. The Science Faculty took over the space for their labs when computer science moved to the SITE building. The lab that was in the Cube is now located almost under the transitway.

I suspect the university might be inclined to do something along the lines of what they did with Vanier Hall. They could save the MacDonald building, tear down the cube and replace the cube with a sort of tower-ish addition to a renovated MacDonald Building....complete with the eyes.

I think you misread - I never said "computer science".

I drive past there almost every day and it doesn't look like they've done anything yet. They might be waiting until the city is done doing whatever they're doing on Laurier there.

City is extending the segregated bike lanes on Laurier as far as east as Cumberland Street.

Has anybody had a look at the end wall facing Seraphim-Marion? They are supposed to be doing repairs to the wall and the foundation there as part of the project. Probably will do that before doing the landscaping.

I thought so but I wasn't 100% sure. Thanks.

The front lawn is now fenced off and the cedars on either side of the stairs have been ripped out. Work is under way!

Considering parks and plazas on campus, as in front of Tabaret.

A July 17 article in the uOttawa Gazette about 12 Things One should know is this item

Quote:
5) We’re aiming to be a car-free campus within 10 years!

A lofty goal . Is it achievable?

If done, should existing surface parking lots become open public spaces , or should buildings be erected on them?

I think it depends. Lot X could become a nice, central, open space, while Lot V could bite the dust with the Cube and make room for a new building. I think Lot K begs for development most of all, however.

I don't think it's necessary to go car-free if it's pedestrian-first.

But streets like Laurier at University, Cumberland and Louis-Pasteur could definitely use some shared-space magic. Corridors like Laurier, Cumberland, Waller and Mackenzie-King, if made more accommodating to bikes and pedestrians, could help bring university life to downtown, Rideau and the market too.

As for the vacant lots, many of them should be developed. Perhaps the university should look at allowing some floors to be devoted to non-university uses (market housing, office space, active commercial frontage) in order to finance their construction; mixing the uses might ensure that the campus is populated during more hours of the day and that its infrastructure (like parking lots which are empty at night which could be used by residents) are getting better use.

Just as importantly, many of the brutalist buildings need to be retrofitted to be less aggressive towards the street and confusing for their users. Morisset library, for example, would greatly benefit from an entrance onto University instead of forcing everyone into the claustrophobia-inducing rat-maze that is the University Centre.

Main drags like Laurier, Cumberland, King Eds... should stay as they are. You can't just eliminate all cars or completely screw with the natural flow of traffic through a big city.

You can't eliminate all parking either. You can reduce and bury it at best.

As for parks/plazas or buildings replacing parking lots, it depends. Parking between Simard and the housing towers should be developed into a 250-300 feet. Parking behind Vanier should become a big plaza.

So how many of the streets that run through the campus are actually City of Ottawa public streets? The University can't just go closing those, now can they.

Not likely--certainly not streets like Laurier and King Edward.

I think what they are getting at is limiting parking further and making the campus dependent on public transit, the LRT, and even walking and biking for those for whom it is possible.

Perhaps things will become clearer when a draft of the Campus Master Plan is presented to the Board of Governors, for them to approve or reject. There will be a special meeting of the BOG to consider the Master Plan on Nov10, 2014.

You know, Im UofO Alum, but to be honest, the current layout of the university and its 'vision' is pretty crappy. The buildings on Seraphin Marion could have been used as part of a larger construction similar to the tower on Elgin. And Taberet lawn, no matter how much work is put into it, will always look like crap. The fence doesnt help that. Its redevelopment reminds me of the movie Accepted when the North Harmon wants to expropriate SHIT to make a big front lawn. Doesnt work out in the end for NH or UO.

And this 'Defy the Conventional' slogan really irritates me; its a University, it is, by definition, conventional! Unconventional is building a Fusion reactor in your Garage, not learning about the Napoleonic wars in the Arts building.

Alumni Week sound and light show at Tabaret

Inside the Temporary Structure (on the Tabaret Lawn) for the Alumni Gala and launch of the Defy The Conventional fund raising campaign. It is a sell-out with 600 attending.
